  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial sun.

WATER:
Water deeply about once per week during establishment. Once established, water occasionally during extended dry periods.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 2–6. This evergreen conifer thrives in cooler climates with cold winters and grows best in full sun with well-draining soil.

Note: The height and form of the Weeping White Spruce can vary depending on how the central leader is trained. Our growers stake the leader upward to encourage taller growth while allowing the side branches to cascade naturally.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Weeping White Spruce, scientifically known as Picea glauca ‘Pendula’, is a distinctive evergreen conifer admired for its dramatic weeping branches and elegant narrow form. This unique cultivar of Canadian Spruce features graceful cascading branches covered in soft blue-green needles that create a striking vertical accent in the landscape. With its sculptural appearance and year-round evergreen interest, the Weeping White Spruce tree is an excellent choice for specimen plantings, focal points, and ornamental landscapes in cooler climates.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Typically grows 1-2 feet per year and can reach 20–40 feet tall and about 6–10 feet wide at maturity, depending on pruning and staking.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once per week during the first growing season to help establish the root system. After establishment, the tree typically requires watering only during extended dry periods. Watering needs vary depending on soil conditions, rainfall, climate, and growing zone.

Weeping White Spruce grows best in full sun, though it can tolerate partial sun. Adequate sunlight helps maintain dense needle growth and a strong central leader.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed in late winter or early spring. Some gardeners choose to stake and train the central leader upward to control the tree’s height and shape, while side branches naturally cascade downward.

FERTILIZING:
Weeping White Spruce typically does not require frequent fertilizing once established. If soil is poor, apply a balanced slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
This tree is extremely cold hardy and usually requires no winter protection within its recommended growing zones. Mulching around the base can help maintain soil moisture and protect roots during winter temperature fluctuations.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and approximately the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing in the nursery pot. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 2-6

Weeping White Spruce grows best in USDA Zones 2–6 and is well suited to colder climates across northern regions of the United States and Canada. This hardy evergreen tolerates long winters, heavy snow, and cold temperatures better than many ornamental conifers. In these cooler regions it develops strong growth and dense foliage when planted in full sun with well-draining soil. It performs best where summers are mild to moderate rather than extremely hot.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
