PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Skip Laurel, scientifically known as Prunus laurocerasus ‘Schipkaensis’, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub prized for its dense foliage and excellent privacy screening ability. Also known as Schip Laurel, this hardy plant features glossy dark green leaves and produces fragrant white flower spikes in spring. With its thick growth habit and adaptability, Skip Laurel is a popular choice for privacy hedges, evergreen screens, and landscape borders.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 10–18 feet tall and 5–7 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to help establish roots. Once established, Skip Laurel becomes moderately drought tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture during extended dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on soil type, rainfall, temperature, and local climate conditions.

Skip Laurel grows well in full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile evergreen shrub for many landscape locations.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Skip Laurel responds well to pruning and can be trimmed to maintain a desired hedge shape. Prune after flowering in late spring or early summer, or lightly trim as needed throughout the growing season.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer for evergreen shrubs in early spring to encourage healthy growth and dense foliage. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Skip Laurel is generally cold hardy within its growing zones and usually requires no special winter protection. Applying mulch around the base can help protect roots and retain soil moisture.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the plant sits at the same level it was previously growing. Place the shrub in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch slightly away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

Skip Laurel grows well in USDA Zones 6–9 and adapts to a wide range of climates across the United States. This evergreen shrub is particularly valued for its tolerance to shade and ability to grow in both urban and residential landscapes. It performs best in well-draining soil with moderate moisture and can tolerate both cooler winters and warm summers within its growing range.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
