The Royal Purple Smoke Bush, also known as the Royal Purple Smoke Tree, is a stunning ornamental shrub prized for its deep burgundy foliage and soft, hazy summer “smoke” plumes. Its leaves emerge wine-red in spring, deepen to rich purple throughout summer, and transition to fiery red-orange in fall. Bold, low-maintenance, and eye-catching all season long, this shrub makes a beautiful focal point, hedge, or backdrop planting in any sunny landscape.

  • Botanical name: Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’
  • Bloom time: Late spring to summer (decorative smoky plumes)
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Full sun

WATER:
Water deeply once per week during the first growing season. After establishment, water every 10–14 days depending on heat and rainfall. Drought tolerant once mature, but benefits from deep watering in long dry spells.

Note: Full sun brings out the deepest, most vivid purple foliage. In partial shade, leaves may soften to a greenish-purple tone.

This shrub can be trained into a tree by selecting a strong central leader when young and pruning into a small tree.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Royal Purple Smoke Bush is a dramatic ornamental shrub loved for its rich, deep purple foliage and cloud-like summer “smoke” plumes. This bold landscape standout offers season-long color—starting with wine-red leaves in spring, maturing to dark plum-purple in summer, and ending with fiery red-orange tones in fall. Easy to grow, fast-growing, and highly versatile, the Royal Purple Smoke Bush brings texture, contrast, and movement to foundation beds, mixed borders, and focal-point plantings.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate; reaches a mature height of 10–15 ft and mature width of 8–12 ft.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water weekly during the first growing season to encourage root development. After establishment, water every 10–14 days depending on temperature and rainfall. This shrub is naturally drought tolerant, but deep watering during long dry spells supports optimal color and blooming. Plant in full sun—at least 6 hours daily—to maintain deep purple foliage. Too much shade can soften the leaf color to greenish-purple.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant or reduce size. Cutting back older stems can promote vigorous new growth and improve leaf color. Light summer shaping is acceptable if needed.

FERTILIZING:
Feed in early spring with an all-purpose shrub fertilizer or compost. Avoid overfertilizing, which can reduce leaf color intensity.

WINTER PROTECTION:
No special winter care is required in zones where it is hardy. Mulch the root zone in colder climates to protect young plants and reduce root freeze-thaw cycles.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and no deeper than the soil line. Loosen roots if pot-bound, set the shrub in place, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and spread mulch around the base—keeping mulch a few inches away from the stems. Continue weekly watering during the first growing season to establish strong roots; reduce watering as the plant matures.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-8

The Royal Purple Smoke Bush performs beautifully across a wide range of climates—from cold northern winters to warm southern summers. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and shows its best color in regions with strong sunlight. This shrub is drought tolerant once established and suitable for dry slopes or lower-irrigation landscapes. Heat and humidity may soften foliage color in the warmest zones but do not affect overall vigor.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Royal Purple Smoke Bush typically grows 10–15 feet tall and 8–12 feet wide at maturity, forming a rounded, upright shape.

This shrub grows at a moderate to fast rate, often adding 1–2 feet of growth per year under ideal conditions.

Plant in full sun in well-draining soil. Choose a spot with room for its mature size and where its deep purple foliage can receive plenty of sunlight for best color.

Spring brings wine-red new leaves that deepen to rich purple in summer. Airy “smoke” plumes appear after flowering, lasting through early fall. In autumn, leaves turn fiery red-orange before dropping for winter.

Yes — you can train it into tree form by selecting a strong, central stem and removing lower side shoots as the plant grows. Continue pruning away new lower branches each year to raise the canopy and maintain a single trunk.

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Trim back older stems to control height, encourage fresh foliage, and maintain an open shape. Light shaping can also be done in summer if needed.

Cutting back older branches (also called “rejuvenation pruning”) stimulates vigorous new shoots with the richest purple leaf color. Remove 1/3 of the oldest stems at ground level each year, or cut the shrub back more dramatically every 2–3 years if desired.

Space 8–12 feet apart to allow each plant enough room to develop its full form. For a looser hedge or screening row, spacing can be widened slightly.

Yes — once established, this shrub is highly drought tolerant. Occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells will help maintain leaf color and vigor.

It is generally considered deer resistant—most deer avoid its foliage and stems, though occasional browsing may happen in winter when food is scarce.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
