Rise Up Lilac Days® Rose is a fragrant, reblooming rose with distinctive lilac-purple flowers and a versatile growth habit. It can be maintained as a large upright shrub or trained as a compact climbing rose, making it a unique choice for borders, garden beds, trellises, fences, and cutting gardens.

  • Botanical name: Rosa × 'ChewLilacdays'
  • Bloom time: Summer through fall
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for the best flowering and overall performance.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water during extended hot or dry periods and avoid consistently saturated soil. Watering needs vary based on climate, rainfall, soil, sunlight, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 4–9. Rise Up Lilac Days® combines strong cold hardiness with good adaptability across temperate climates and performs best in sunny locations with well-draining soil.

Rise Up Lilac Days® is not limited to a traditional shrub habit. It belongs to the Rise Up® series of compact climbing roses and can be maintained as an upright shrub through pruning or allowed to develop longer canes and trained onto a trellis, fence, or other support.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Rise Up Lilac Days® Rose, scientifically known as Rosa × 'ChewLilacdays', is a versatile, fragrant rose with uniquely colored lilac-purple flowers that bring a soft, almost blue-toned look to the garden. Its vigorous, reblooming growth can be pruned and maintained as a shrub or trained vertically as a compact climbing rose, making it an excellent choice for garden beds, borders, trellises, fences, and other sunny landscape areas. Strong fragrance, healthy foliage, and repeat flowering earned Rise Up Lilac Days® recognition as the 2026 Proven Winners Rose of the Year®.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 5–8 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide at maturity, with longer canes possible when trained as a climber.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Rise Up Lilac Days® Rose when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water less frequently but provide supplemental water during extended periods of heat or drought. Avoid allowing the root zone to become excessively dry or remain consistently saturated. There is no fixed watering schedule, so always check the soil first and adjust based on climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

Rise Up Lilac Days® performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plenty of sunlight encourages abundant flowers, vigorous growth, and healthy foliage.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune in early spring as new growth begins. If growing it as a shrub, cut it back by about one-third to maintain a fuller, more compact shape. If growing it as a climber, keep the strongest long canes and guide them onto a trellis or other support.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced or rose fertilizer in spring or early summer if needed. Avoid fertilizing in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Rise Up Lilac Days® is cold hardy to Zone 4 and generally requires little winter protection once established. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the base of the plant.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot and gently loosen any tightly bound or circling roots. Position the rose so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping mulch several inches away from the base.

If you plan to grow Rise Up Lilac Days® as a climber, plant it near a sturdy trellis, fence, arbor, or other support and gently secure the developing canes as they grow.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

Rise Up Lilac Days® Rose grows well throughout USDA Zones 4–9, providing excellent cold hardiness while also performing in warmer temperate climates. Plant it in full sun for the strongest flowering and healthiest growth. Its vigorous yet manageable habit makes it adaptable to both traditional shrub plantings and vertical applications when given a trellis or other support. Good drainage and air circulation help support healthy foliage throughout the growing season.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rise Up Lilac Days® typically reaches approximately 5–8 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide, making it larger and more upright than many traditional shrub roses. Established plants may develop canes reaching 8–15 feet when trained to climb, so final height depends significantly on pruning and training.

Rise Up Lilac Days® is a vigorous rose that can typically produce approximately 1–3 feet of new cane growth per year once established under favorable conditions. Its actual growth rate varies with climate, sunlight, water, pruning, and whether it is maintained as a shrub or trained vertically.

Plant Rise Up Lilac Days® in full sun with well-draining soil and good air circulation. If you want to take advantage of its climbing habit, plant it near a trellis, arbor, fence, or other sturdy structure where its longer canes can be supported.

Rise Up Lilac Days® flowers during summer and fall, producing repeated flushes of blooms throughout the growing season.

Yes. One of this variety's biggest advantages is its versatility. Regular spring pruning can maintain it as a large, upright shrub, while allowing its longer canes to develop and providing support lets it grow as a compact climber.

Yes. Rise Up Lilac Days® belongs to Proven Winners' Rise Up® series, described as compact or “mini” climbing roses. It produces longer canes than a conventional shrub rose but remains more manageable than many traditional full-size climbers.

Only if you want to grow it as a climber. It can be pruned and maintained as a freestanding shrub without a trellis, or its longer canes can be trained onto a trellis, fence, arbor, or similar support for vertical growth.

Rise Up Lilac Days® produces unusual lilac-purple flowers with cool, almost blue undertones. Exact coloring can vary somewhat with temperature, sunlight, and flower age.

Yes. Strong fragrance is one of this variety's standout characteristics. Its powerful scent combined with its unusual flower color makes it especially appealing near patios, walkways, and other areas where its fragrance can be enjoyed.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
