PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Prairifire Crabapple Tree, botanically known as Malus ‘Prairifire’, is a showy flowering crabapple prized for its deep pink to red spring blooms, attractive foliage, and small dark red‑purple fruit that persists into fall and winter. Its compact, rounded form and disease resistance make it an excellent specimen for ornamental landscapes, small yards, or as a colorful street‑side accent.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 15–20 ft tall and 15–20 ft wide at maturity, forming a rounded canopy that works well in small to medium landscapes.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once established, this crabapple prefers moderate watering and can tolerate occasional dry spells, but consistent moisture supports prolific flowering and fruit set. Prairifire Crabapple performs best in full sun, which maximizes showy spring flowers, dense foliage, and abundant, persistent fruit. Aim for 6+ hours of direct sunlight each day.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter (while dormant) to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches and maintain shape. Avoid pruning in spring, when fresh cuts can invite disease.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow‑release tree and shrub fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. This supports healthy leafing, blooms, and fruit without encouraging excessive vegetative growth.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Prairifire is cold‑hardy in Zones 4–8 and generally needs no special winter protection. In colder portions of its range, mulch around the root zone in late fall to insulate young trees against freeze‑thaw cycles.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a site with full sun and well‑drained soil. Dig a planting hole about twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Place the tree so the top of the root ball is level with surrounding soil, backfill gently, and water thoroughly. Apply a 2–3‑inch layer of mulch around the base (keeping it a few inches from the trunk) to retain moisture and regulate temperature. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish the root system. Once settled, Prairifire Crabapple tolerates moderate dry periods and provides reliable spring flowers and fall fruit year after year.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-8

Prairifire Crabapple thrives in USDA Zones 4 through 8, performing reliably in cold northern winters and warm summer climates. This flowering tree’s moderate size makes it ideal for yards, patios, and city landscapes that need seasonal interest without overwhelming space. In spring, it bursts with deep pink flowers; summer brings lush foliage; fall yields colorful leaves and prolific fruit that attracts birds. Its adaptability to a range of soil types and urban conditions offers landscape value from spring through winter

Frequently Asked Questions

The Prairifire Crabapple Tree typically grows to a mature height of 15 to 20 feet with a spread of 15 to 20 feet. This compact size makes it suitable for various landscape settings, including small gardens and yards. Regular pruning can help manage its size and shape, ensuring it fits well in your desired planting location.

The Prairifire Crabapple Tree has a moderate growth rate, typically growing 12 to 24 inches per year under optimal conditions. Factors such as sunlight, soil quality, watering, and overall care can influence its growth rate. Ensuring the tree receives adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients will promote healthy and consistent growth.

The best place to plant the Prairifire Crabapple Tree is in a sunny location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Choose a spot with well-draining soil, ideally slightly acidic to neutral with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Ensure the area has good air circulation to help prevent disease. Plant the tree at least 10 to 15 feet away from structures and other large trees to provide ample space for growth. This will allow the tree to thrive and showcase its beautiful blooms and fruit.

Plant the Prairifire Crabapple Tree at least 10 to 15 feet away from structures such as houses, garages, or fences. This distance allows sufficient space for the tree to grow to its mature size without interfering with structures. Additionally, it ensures adequate air circulation and sunlight penetration, promoting healthy growth and reducing the risk of disease.

Care Instructions:

Sunlight: Plant in full sun, ensuring the tree receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and blooming.

Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

Soil: Use well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. The tree adapts well to various soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil.

Fertilization: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to provide essential nutrients. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote leaf growth over flowers.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Thinning the canopy improves air circulation and sunlight penetration.

Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weed growth. Keep the mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Pest and Disease Control: Regularly inspect the tree for signs of pests or diseases. Treat any issues promptly with appropriate organic or chemical controls.

Winter Protection: In harsh climates, protect young trees from extreme cold and wind with tree wraps or burlap.

Proper care ensures your Prairifire Crabapple Tree remains healthy, blooms beautifully, and produces attractive fruit.

It produces small, glossy maroon crabapples that persist through fall and into winter. While not typically eaten fresh, the fruit is a valuable food source for birds and wildlife.

Yes, pruning is beneficial for the Prairifire Crabapple Tree. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches to maintain tree health. Thinning out the interior branches improves air circulation and sunlight penetration, which promotes better flowering and overall health. Regular pruning also helps maintain the tree's shape and size, ensuring it remains attractive and manageable.

The Prairifire Crabapple Tree typically takes 2 to 5 years to bloom after planting. The exact time can vary depending on the tree's age at planting, growing conditions, and overall care. Ensuring the tree receives adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients can help promote earlier and more robust blooming.

The Prairifire Crabapple Tree is hardy and can tolerate cold temperatures, but taking some winterizing steps can help ensure its health:

Mulch: Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the tree to insulate the roots and retain moisture.
Watering: Water the tree well before the ground freezes to ensure it is well-hydrated going into winter.
Protection: Use tree wraps or burlap to protect young trees or those in particularly harsh climates from cold winds and frost damage.
Pruning: Avoid heavy pruning in late fall as it can stimulate new growth that is vulnerable to winter damage. Prune in late winter or early spring instead.

These steps will help your Prairifire Crabapple Tree withstand winter conditions and emerge healthy in the spring.

No. Prairifire is primarily grown as an ornamental tree, not for fruit production. However, if planted near apple or crabapple varieties, it can serve as a pollinator tree for other apple cultivars.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
