PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Pink Snow Camellia, scientifically known as Camellia sasanqua ‘Pink Snow’, is a compact evergreen shrub known for its delicate, semi-double pale pink blooms that appear in fall to early winter. With a soft floral fragrance, glossy dark green foliage, and upright growth, it’s a favorite for hedges, foundation plantings, or brightening shaded areas. Low-maintenance and early blooming, it adds elegance and color when most other plants are dormant.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches 5–8 ft tall and 4–6 ft wide when mature

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Typically every 5–7 days during active growth or bloom season. Pink Snow Camellia does well in partial shade to filtered sunlight. It can tolerate more sun than most camellias but prefers protection from intense afternoon heat in warmer zones.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune right after flowering ends in winter to shape or thin the shrub. Avoid pruning in late summer or fall, as this can remove developing flower buds.

Fertilization: Feed with an acid-loving fertilizer in early spring and again in midsummer. Avoid fertilizing after August.

Winter Protection: Hardy in Zones 7–10. In colder areas of Zone 7, apply mulch to protect the roots and plant in a sheltered location out of winter winds.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant in well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower than its height. Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is just above ground level, then backfill and water thoroughly. Apply mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the base. Choose a site with protection from harsh winter wind and afternoon sun in hot climates.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-10

Pink Snow Camellia thrives in USDA Zones 7–10 and is well-suited to southern gardens and coastal climates. It tolerates more sun than Camellia japonica varieties, making it a flexible choice for partially shaded or filtered light areas. In cooler zones, plant in a protected spot to avoid frost damage to buds. With its early bloom season and evergreen leaves, it offers reliable structure and color even in the off-season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pink Snow Camellia typically grows 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide at maturity, forming a soft, upright shape that’s ideal for hedges, foundation plantings, or massing in the landscape. It can also be lightly trained into a small tree form with selective pruning.

Camellia sasanqua is considered a moderate grower, averaging 8 to 12 inches of growth per year under ideal conditions. Compared to Camellia japonica, it’s a bit faster-growing and more adaptable to sunnier spots and varying soil types.

For best results, plant Camellia sasanqua in a location with partial sun to filtered light—it tolerates more sun than other camellias but still appreciates some afternoon shade, especially in hot climates. Choose acidic, well-draining soil, and amend with compost or pine bark to improve texture. It thrives in USDA Zones 7–10.

To create a flowering privacy hedge or evergreen screen, space Pink Snow Camellias 4 to 6 feet apart, measuring from the center of each plant. This gives them room to fill in naturally without overcrowding, ensuring airflow and healthy growth.

To increase blooming:
• Plant in a bright location with morning sun or dappled light.
• Use an acid-loving fertilizer (like for azaleas or camellias) in spring and midsummer.
• Avoid pruning after early summer, since buds form in late summer for fall bloom.
• Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially during dry spells.

Regular feeding, proper light, and avoiding summer pruning will encourage more flower production each season.

Yes—Camellia sasanqua performs well in a large container if given the right care:
• Use a pot at least 18–24 inches wide with good drainage.
• Choose an acidic, well-draining potting mix made for camellias or azaleas.
• Place the container in a spot with morning sun or light shade.
• Water regularly and feed with a slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants.
• In cooler zones, bring the container into a sheltered area during winter.

Container-grown camellias are perfect for patios, entryways, or balconies where you can admire their fall bloom up close.

Pruning is optional, but a light trim helps maintain shape and remove damaged branches:
• Prune immediately after blooming, typically in late fall or early winter.
• Remove dead or crossing branches to promote airflow.
• You can also lightly shape the plant to keep it neat or encourage a tree-like form.

Avoid heavy pruning after midsummer, as this can remove next season’s flower buds.

Caring for Pink Snow Camellia is simple with the right routine:
• Light: Morning sun or filtered light; some shade in the afternoon is ideal
• Soil: Rich, acidic, and well-draining
• Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during hot months or drought
• Fertilizer: Feed in spring and again in early summer with an acid-loving plant fertilizer
• Mulch: Add 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect roots

It’s a low-maintenance shrub that rewards you with beautiful blooms and year-round greenery.

Camellia sasanqua is more cold-hardy than you might expect. In USDA Zones 7–10, it usually does not require winter protection once established. However:
• In colder zones or for container-grown plants, provide mulch for root insulation.
• Protect from harsh winds or deep freezes with frost cloth or temporary coverings.
• Don’t fertilize after late summer to avoid tender new growth before winter.

Pink Snow Camellia blooms in late fall through early winter, typically from October to December, depending on your climate. It produces delicate, soft pink semi-double flowers that open just as the rest of the landscape is starting to go dormant—adding rare off-season color and charm.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
