PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Peggy Martin Climbing Rose, scientifically known as Rosa ‘Peggy Martin’, is a vigorous, thornless climbing rose adored for its clusters of bright pink, lightly fragrant blooms that appear in spring and often repeat into summer. This resilient variety gained fame after surviving Hurricane Katrina, earning it the nickname “The Katrina Rose.” Fast-growing, disease-resistant, and stunning on fences, arbors, or trellises, it brings low-maintenance beauty to cottage and Southern gardens alike.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; reaches 10–15 ft tall and 6–8 ft wide when mature

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry. Typically once or twice per week during the growing season; increase in extreme heat. This rose loves full sun and blooms best with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sun equals more flowers.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune after the first big flush of blooms in late spring to shape and control size. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage reblooming.

Fertilization: Feed with a rose fertilizer in early spring, after the first bloom, and again in midsummer. Stop feeding about 6–8 weeks before first frost.

Winter Protection: Hardy in Zones 5–9. In colder areas of Zone 5, add mulch around the base and provide protection if extreme cold is expected.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil and support for climbing (such as a fence, trellis, or arbor). Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Set the rose so the crown is level with the soil line, backfill, and water thoroughly. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch several inches away from the stems. Tie new canes loosely to your structure as they grow to encourage upward growth and even coverage.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Peggy Martin Climbing Rose thrives in USDA Zones 5–9 and performs well in a variety of climates, from the humid South to cooler northern regions. It is highly disease-resistant and adapts to both clay and loamy soils, as long as they are well-drained. This rose can handle heat, humidity, and brief drought conditions once established. With its ability to come back strong each year, it’s a favorite for low-maintenance landscapes, Southern gardens, and classic rose lovers.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Peggy Martin Climbing Rose can grow 15 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide with support. This vigorous climber is known for its dense, cascading canes and profuse blooms, making it a standout for arbors, fences, pergolas, or trellises in full sun.

Peggy Martin is a fast-growing climbing rose, often adding 5 to 10 feet of new growth per year in ideal conditions. With regular watering, feeding, and sun exposure, it quickly covers fences and structures with lush foliage and vibrant pink blooms.

Plant Peggy Martin in a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily. Choose a site with well-draining soil and good air circulation. This rose is hardy in USDA Zones 4–9 and is particularly well-suited for trellises, fences, garden arches, and walls. Avoid low-lying areas where water tends to collect.

Training Peggy Martin is easy with the right support:
1. Install a trellis, fence, arbor, or wire support at planting time.
2. As the canes grow, gently tie them using soft plant ties, twine, or garden tape.
3. Spread the canes horizontally or in a fan shape—this encourages more blooms along the length of each cane.
4. Prune stray canes and guide new growth to keep it full and balanced.

Regular training helps create a structured, bloom-heavy display over time.

Yes, you can grow Peggy Martin in a large container, but it requires space and support:
• Choose a pot at least 20–24 inches wide and deep, with good drainage.
• Use well-draining potting soil and a slow-release rose fertilizer.
• Add a trellis or obelisk in the container for support.
• Place the container in full sun, and water regularly to prevent the soil from drying out.

Container-grown roses may stay slightly smaller but can still thrive and bloom beautifully with proper care.

Peggy Martin is a nearly thornless, vigorous rose that responds well to pruning:
• Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
• Remove dead, damaged, or crossing canes.
• Cut back older canes to the base every few years to encourage fresh growth.
• After the first bloom flush, deadhead spent flowers and lightly shape if needed.

Training and annual pruning help maintain a tidy form and encourage heavy blooming.

Peggy Martin is low-maintenance and disease-resistant, but thrives with consistent care:
• Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours daily)
• Watering: Water deeply when the top inch of soil is dry—aim for consistent moisture, especially in summer
• Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil
• Fertilizer: Feed with a rose fertilizer in early spring, and again after each bloom cycle
• Pruning: Shape in early spring and after blooming
• Mulching: Add mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds

This rose is prized for its resilience and reblooming ability, even in tough southern climates.

Winter care depends on your zone:
• In Zones 7–9, minimal protection is needed—just mulch the base and avoid pruning late in the season.
• In Zones 4–6, mulch heavily around the base (up to 8 inches deep) after the first frost.
• Consider wrapping canes with burlap or frost cloth in areas with harsh winters.
• Avoid late-season feeding or pruning, which may trigger tender growth before frost.

Peggy Martin is cold-hardy and disease-tolerant, but still benefits from basic winter prep.

Peggy Martin blooms in late spring to early summer, with a stunning flush of fragrant pink flowers. In warm climates, it may rebloom throughout the season, especially with regular deadheading and good care. Blooms appear in large clusters, covering the plant for a dramatic display.

Yes—Peggy Martin is a climbing rose and performs best when supported by a trellis, arbor, fence, or other vertical structure. Without support, it may sprawl across the ground. Training it to climb also increases bloom production and keeps the plant looking tidy and balanced in the landscape.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
