PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Owari Satsuma Tree, scientifically known as Citrus unshiu ‘Owari’, is a cold-hardy mandarin orange tree that produces easy-to-peel, seedless fruit with sweet, juicy flavor. This compact citrus variety is ideal for backyard orchards, patio containers, or small-space gardening. With its glossy evergreen foliage, fragrant spring blooms, and early harvest season, it’s a favorite among home growers looking for delicious citrus without the hassle.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches 6–10 ft tall and 6–8 ft wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Typically every 5–7 days in spring/summer and every 10–14 days in fall/winter. The Owari Satsuma Tree requires full sun to thrive and produce flavorful fruit. At least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed—just remove any dead or crowded branches in early spring. Prune lightly to maintain shape or improve airflow within the canopy.

Fertilization: Use a citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks from early spring to late summer. Avoid feeding in winter when growth slows.

Winter Protection: In Zones 7 and below, container-grown trees should be brought indoors before the first frost. Protect in-ground trees with frost cloths during sudden cold snaps.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Set the tree in the hole with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill, gently tamping the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches from the trunk. For containers, use a large pot with drainage holes and citrus-friendly potting mix.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 8–11 outdoors; or Zones 4–7 if overwintered indoors.

The Owari Satsuma Tree thrives in USDA Zones 8–11, making it one of the most cold-tolerant citrus trees available. It can survive brief dips into the mid 20s °F once established. In cooler regions (Zones 4–7), it performs well in containers and can be moved indoors during winter. This adaptability makes it an excellent option for gardeners across a range of climates who want homegrown citrus.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Owari Satsuma tree typically grows to 6-10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide when planted in the ground.

Size can vary based on how it’s grown:
• In-ground trees in warm climates will reach their full mature size of around 10-12 feet tall and wide.
• Container-grown trees usually stay smaller, around 6–8 feet tall, depending on pot size and pruning.

You can control the size with light annual pruning, especially if you’re growing it on a patio or in a small yard. Despite its compact size, it produces full-sized, sweet, seedless fruit each year.

The Owari Satsuma tree has a moderate growth rate, typically growing 12 to 24 inches per year under ideal conditions.

Growth depends on several factors:
• Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours daily) encourages faster, healthier growth.
• Watering: Consistent, deep watering supports steady development—avoid letting the soil completely dry out or stay soggy.
• Fertilizing: Regular feeding with a citrus-specific fertilizer during the growing season boosts growth and future fruit production.
• Climate: Trees grow more quickly in warm, mild climates. Growth slows during winter or if the tree is exposed to cold temperatures.
• Container size (if potted): Limited root space can slow growth, so repot every 2–3 years as needed.

Once established, the tree will steadily grow each year and begin producing easy-to-peel, seedless fruit in late fall.

The best place to plant an Owari Satsuma tree is in a sunny, well-drained spot with protection from strong winds and freezing temperatures.

Ideal conditions:
• Sunlight: Choose a location that gets 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for strong growth and fruit production.
• Soil: Plant in well-draining soil—sandy or loamy soils work best. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
• Wind protection: Satsuma trees have delicate branches, so plant near a fence, wall, or hedge that provides a windbreak while still allowing air circulation.
• Spacing: Allow at least 6–10 feet of space around the tree to accommodate its mature size and ensure good airflow.
• Climate: If you’re in a colder zone, consider planting it in a large container so you can move it indoors or into a sheltered space during freezes. While it’s one of the most cold-hardy citrus varieties, young trees especially benefit from protection when temps dip below 28°F.

Planting your Owari Satsuma in the right location gives it the best chance to thrive and produce fruit year after year.

Yes, the Owari Satsuma tree is self-pollinating, which means it doesn’t need another citrus tree nearby to produce fruit.

Here’s what that means for you:
• A single tree can produce fruit on its own—perfect for small spaces or container growing.
• While it doesn’t need pollinators to set fruit, bees and airflow can still help improve fruit yield if grown outdoors.
• If you’re growing it indoors or in a greenhouse, occasional manual pollination (gently brushing pollen between flowers) can help increase fruit set.

In short, you only need one Owari Satsuma tree to enjoy its seedless, easy-to-peel fruit.

The Owari Satsuma tree typically begins bearing fruit 2 to 3 years after planting, depending on its age at the time of purchase and how well it’s cared for.

Factors that affect fruiting timeline:
• Young trees (1–2 years old) may take closer to 3 years to produce.
• Mature, well-established trees can fruit sooner, sometimes even the first year after planting.
• Consistent sunlight, proper watering, and citrus-specific fertilizer will support earlier and healthier fruit production.
• Trees grown in containers may take slightly longer if root space or nutrients are limited.

Once it starts, you can expect fruit annually, typically ripening in late fall to early winter.

Caring for your Owari Satsuma tree is simple when you stick to a few citrus essentials. Here’s a clear care guide:

Sunlight:
Provide 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. A south-facing spot works best outdoors. Indoors, place it near a bright window or use a grow light.

Watering:
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Trees in containers may need more frequent watering than those planted in the ground. Always ensure good drainage to avoid root rot.

Soil:
Use well-draining soil, such as sandy loam or a citrus-specific potting mix for containers.

Fertilizing:
Feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer starting in early spring and continue monthly through summer. Stop feeding in late fall to allow the tree to rest.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crowded branches and to shape the tree. Avoid cutting off too much at once.

Cold Protection:
Mature trees tolerate cold down to 15–20°F, but young trees are more sensitive. Protect in-ground trees with frost cloth during freezes and move potted trees indoors if temperatures drop below freezing.

Container Tips:
If growing in a pot, use one with drainage holes and repot every 2–3 years as the tree grows. A rolling stand can help move it in and out with the seasons.

With consistent care, your Owari Satsuma tree will reward you with fragrant blooms and sweet, easy-to-peel fruit each year.

Water your Owari Satsuma tree when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry, adjusting frequency based on the season and how it’s planted.

In-ground trees:
Water deeply about once a week, increasing to twice a week during hot, dry weather. In cooler months, reduce frequency.

Container-grown trees:
Check soil moisture every few days. Water thoroughly when the top inch is dry—containers dry out faster than garden soil. Always make sure excess water can drain out.

Tips for proper watering:
• Avoid shallow, frequent watering—deep, infrequent watering encourages strong roots.
• Use mulch around the base (not touching the trunk) to help retain moisture.
• Yellowing leaves or leaf drop can be a sign of overwatering or underwatering.

Consistency is key. Keeping the soil evenly moist—but not soggy—helps keep your tree healthy and productive.

The Owari Satsuma tree is one of the most cold-hardy citrus varieties and can typically tolerate temperatures down to 15–20°F once established.

Here’s what to keep in mind:
• Young trees are more vulnerable and should be protected if temps drop below 28°F.
• Extended exposure to freezing temps can damage blossoms, young fruit, and tender new growth.
• If a hard freeze is expected, cover in-ground trees with frost cloth or blankets and move potted trees indoors or to a sheltered area.

For colder regions, growing the tree in a container makes it easier to protect during winter months. Despite its hardiness, consistent freezing temps can still cause damage, so take precautions during cold snaps.

The best time to prune your Owari Satsuma tree is in late winter to early spring, just after the last frost and before new growth appears. This timing helps the tree recover quickly and encourages healthy growth and fruiting.

Pruning tips:
• Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches to keep the tree healthy.
• Thin out crowded areas to improve air circulation and light penetration.
• Shape the canopy lightly to maintain size and balance—avoid heavy pruning, especially on young trees.
• Skip pruning in fall or early winter, as it can encourage new growth that’s vulnerable to cold damage.

For container-grown trees, light pruning can be done throughout the year to maintain shape, but save major cuts for spring. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the tree.

If your Owari Satsuma tree isn’t fruiting, it’s likely due to one or more of the following factors:

Tree Age:
Owari Satsuma trees typically start producing fruit 2 to 3 years after planting. If your tree is still young, it may just need more time to mature.

Sunlight:
These trees need at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Insufficient light can prevent blooming and fruit development.

Overfertilizing:
Too much nitrogen encourages leafy growth instead of fruit. Use a citrus-specific fertilizer and follow the recommended schedule—avoid fertilizing in late fall or winter.

Watering Issues:
Both overwatering and underwatering can stress the tree and delay fruiting. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and ensure good drainage.

Lack of Pollination (less common):
Owari Satsuma trees are self-pollinating, but poor airflow or lack of pollinators—especially in indoor or greenhouse settings—can reduce fruit set. Gently shaking branches during bloom can help.

Environmental Stress:
Sudden changes in temperature, strong winds, or transplant shock can all delay fruit production. Be patient and ensure your tree is in a stable, protected environment.

With the right care and a little patience, your Owari Satsuma should begin producing its sweet, seedless fruit consistently each year.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.
