The Norway Spruce Tree is a fast-growing evergreen known for its dense foliage and classic pyramidal shape. It is commonly used for privacy screens, windbreaks, and large landscape plantings due to its ability to grow quickly and provide year-round coverage. Its durability and cold hardiness make it a dependable choice for many climates.

  • Botanical name: Picea abies
  • Other common names: European Spruce
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial sun.

WATER:
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 3–7. Norway Spruce thrives in cooler climates and adapts well to a variety of soil conditions.

Note: Norway Spruce is a large-growing tree, so be sure to plant it in a location with enough space to accommodate its mature size. Bottom branches can be pruned up to allow for more space if needed.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Norway Spruce Tree, scientifically known as Picea abies, is a fast-growing evergreen known for its classic pyramidal shape and dense, dark green needles. This hardy tree is widely used for privacy screens, windbreaks, and large landscape plantings due to its rapid growth and full branching. With its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions, the Norway Spruce is a reliable choice for homeowners looking to create year-round privacy and structure.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate. Norway Spruce typically grows 2–3 feet per year and can reach 40–60 feet tall and 25–30 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once per week during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, Norway Spruce is moderately drought tolerant, though it benefits from occasional watering during extended dry periods. Watering needs vary depending on climate, soil type, and rainfall.

Norway Spruce grows best in full sun, though it can tolerate partial sun.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning is required. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as Norway Spruce naturally maintains its pyramidal shape.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring if needed to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Norway Spruce is extremely cold hardy and typically requires no winter protection once established. Applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base can help protect roots and retain moisture, especially for young trees.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-7

Norway Spruce grows well in USDA Zones 3–7 and is extremely cold hardy. It thrives in cooler climates and adapts to a wide range of soil types as long as drainage is adequate. This evergreen is commonly used in northern and temperate regions where it can withstand harsh winters and windy conditions.

Yes. It is commonly used as a windbreak tree due to its strong structure and dense growth.

Yes. Norway Spruce is fairly adaptable and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, as long as the soil is well-draining and not consistently waterlogged.

No. Norway Spruce has a non-invasive, spreading root system, but due to its large size, it should still be planted at least 15–20 feet away from structures, driveways, or foundations.

Yes. Norway Spruce produces long, hanging pine cones, typically 4–6 inches in length. These cones usually drop in fall, but they are not considered overly messy and are easy to clean up. Many homeowners actually enjoy their ornamental look, especially during the winter months or for seasonal decor.

Norway Spruce is generally considered deer resistant, especially once established. While young trees may experience occasional browsing in areas with heavy deer pressure, it is not a preferred food source, making it a reliable option for homeowners in deer-prone areas.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
