NewGen Freedom® Boxwood is a vigorous evergreen shrub with glossy green foliage and a dense, rounded shape. Its faster growth, classic boxwood appearance, and improved resistance to two major boxwood problems make it an excellent choice for hedges, foundation plantings, formal gardens, and evergreen specimens.

Botanical name: Buxus NewGen Freedom® 'SB 300' PP32,421
Evergreen
Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Grows in full sun to shade. Partial sun is an excellent choice in many climates, while some afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter regions.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water less frequently but provide supplemental moisture during extended hot or dry periods. Watering needs vary based on climate, sunlight, soil, weather, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 5–8. NewGen Freedom® performs well across cool and temperate climates and can tolerate warmer conditions within its recommended range when planted in well-draining soil with adequate moisture.

**Please note: NewGen Freedom® Boxwood arrives in its natural form and is not pre-pruned into a ball shape.

NewGen Freedom® is a faster-growing boxwood, which is great if you're trying to establish a hedge or mature-looking landscape more quickly. However, that extra vigor also means it benefits from annual pruning to maintain its dense, rounded shape. Without pruning, vigorous new growth can become loose or open in the center.

The foliage may develop a bronze tint during winter, particularly when planted in full sun or an exposed location. This seasonal color change does not necessarily mean the plant is unhealthy.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

NewGen Freedom® Boxwood, Buxus NewGen Freedom® 'SB 300' PP32,421, is a vigorous evergreen shrub with glossy green foliage and a dense, rounded habit. Selected for its good resistance to boxwood blight and strong resistance to boxwood leafminer, it offers classic boxwood beauty with improved landscape performance. Its faster growth makes it an excellent choice for medium hedges, foundation plantings, formal gardens, and evergreen specimens.

**Please note: NewGen Freedom® Boxwood arrives in its natural form and is not pre-pruned into a ball shape.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate for a boxwood. Reaches approximately 3-5 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted NewGen Freedom® Boxwood deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water less frequently but provide supplemental water during extended hot or dry periods. Avoid allowing the root zone to become excessively dry or remain consistently saturated. Always check the soil before watering rather than following a fixed schedule, as watering needs vary based on climate, rainfall, sunlight, temperature, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

NewGen Freedom® Boxwood grows in full sun to shade, though partial sun is an excellent choice in many climates. In hotter regions, protection from intense afternoon sun can help reduce heat stress, while adequate sunlight helps maintain dense, healthy growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
NewGen Freedom® grows faster than many boxwoods and benefits from pruning once a year in late winter or early spring to keep its shape dense and tidy. Regular pruning also helps prevent the center from opening up as new growth develops.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring if needed. Avoid fertilizing in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
NewGen Freedom® is cold hardy in Zones 5–8 and generally requires little winter protection once established. Apply a light layer of mulch over the root zone, keeping it away from the stems. Some winter bronzing is normal, especially in sunny or exposed locations, and does not necessarily indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with full sun to shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot or any wrapping around the root ball and gently loosen tightly bound or circling roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a light layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the stems.

Allow enough space between plants to maintain good air circulation, particularly when planting a hedge. Good spacing and airflow are especially beneficial for reducing conditions that favor boxwood diseases.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-8

NewGen Freedom® Boxwood grows best in USDA Zones 5–8 and adapts well to a range of temperate climates. It is cold hardy while also performing well through much of the Upper South when provided with adequate moisture and good drainage. It can grow in sun, partial sun, or shade, making it versatile for a variety of landscape settings. In exposed locations, especially full sun, the foliage may temporarily develop a bronze color during winter.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

NewGen Freedom® Boxwood develops a medium-sized, rounded habit. It reaches approximately 3.5 feet tall and wide after 15 years and about 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide after 25 years.

NewGen Freedom® is considered a fast-growing boxwood, typically adding approximately 3–6 inches of growth per year. Its extra vigor allows it to fill out a hedge or landscape planting faster than many traditional boxwood varieties.

Plant NewGen Freedom® in an area with well-draining soil and good air circulation. It can grow in full sun, partial sun, or shade, making it suitable for foundation plantings, formal gardens, hedges, borders, and specimen plantings.

For a hedge, spacing approximately 3–4 feet apart, center to center, allows the plants to grow together while maintaining airflow. For individual specimens, allow approximately 4–5 feet of space to accommodate the plant's mature width.

NewGen Freedom® has demonstrated good resistance to boxwood blight when properly planted and cared for. However, no boxwood is completely immune, so good airflow, proper watering, and avoiding sites with a history of severe boxwood blight are still important.

Yes. NewGen Freedom® was specifically selected in part for its strong resistance to boxwood leafminer, one of the most common insect pests affecting boxwood.

Yes. Because NewGen Freedom® grows more vigorously than many boxwoods, annual pruning is recommended. Pruning in late winter to early spring helps maintain a dense, compact shape and prevents the center of the shrub from opening up.

Yes. Its vigorous growth, dense foliage, rounded habit, and ability to respond well to pruning make NewGen Freedom® an excellent choice for a medium-height evergreen hedge. It can also be used as a foundation plant or individual specimen.

NewGen Freedom® is evergreen and retains its foliage throughout winter. However, the leaves may develop a bronze tint during cold weather, particularly when the plant is exposed to full sun or harsh winter conditions.

Yes. NewGen Freedom® can grow in sun, partial sun, or shade. Growth may be somewhat less dense in deeper shade, while plants in full sun may be more prone to seasonal winter bronzing.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
