PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Hicks Yew Shrub, botanically known as Taxus × media ‘Hicksii’, is a classic evergreen shrub valued for its dense foliage, upright growth habit, and versatility in formal landscapes. This durable yew features deep green needles that provide year-round structure and privacy. Commonly used for hedges, foundation plantings, and screening, the Hicks Yew Shrub is known for its shade tolerance and adaptability to a wide range of landscape conditions.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 10–12 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season. Once established, water every 7–10 days during extended dry periods. The Hicks Yew Shrub grows well in both full sun and partial shade. It performs especially well in locations with filtered light or morning sun.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune Hicks Yew in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or unhealthy branches and lightly shape the plant as needed; it tolerates heavy pruning well.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a general-purpose, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support lush, dark green foliage. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Hicks Yew is cold-hardy but may benefit from a windbreak in exposed locations. Mulching around the base adds extra protection during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply mulch around the base while keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-7

The Hicks Yew Shrub thrives in cooler climates with moderate summers and cold winters. It performs well throughout the northern United States and other temperate regions where winters are cold but soils remain well-drained. This evergreen shrub tolerates shade better than many other conifers, making it a reliable option for landscapes with limited sunlight. Proper drainage is important to maintain healthy root systems.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
