Golden Bamboo is a striking, fast-growing bamboo variety known for its vibrant, golden-yellow canes and dense foliage. Its dramatic appearance and rapid growth make it an excellent choice for creating privacy screens or adding an exotic touch to garden landscapes.

  • Botanical name: Phyllostachys aurea
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun to partial shade

WATER:
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Approximately every 1-2 weeks. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 7-10; thrives in temperate to subtropical climates with well-draining soil

Note: Golden Bamboo is a vigorous grower and may spread quickly. Consider installing barriers or using containment methods to manage its growth and prevent it from becoming invasive. Regular watering and occasional pruning can help maintain its appearance and prevent overcrowding.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Golden Bamboo, also known as Fishpole Bamboo and scientifically named Phyllostachys aurea, is a perennial grass that brings an exotic and serene elegance to any garden. Renowned for its striking golden-yellow canes and lush green foliage, it makes an ideal natural screen, windbreak, or dramatic focal point. With a high growth rate and adaptability to various climates, Golden Bamboo is perfect for gardeners who want to make a stunning, natural statement in their outdoor spaces.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; can reach heights of up to 30 feet and a width of 10-15 feet. Adds 2-3 ft a year.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

While adaptable to various light conditions, Golden Bamboo thrives best in full sun, where its golden canes will be at their most vivid. Watering should be done deeply and consistently, especially during the establishment phase and hot, dry seasons, to encourage a robust root system and healthy growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Remove dead, damaged, or crowded canes at the base of Golden Bamboo to improve airflow and encourage new growth. Prune in late winter to early spring.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and vibrant cane color.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder zones near its hardiness limit, mulch around the base to help protect roots during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a planting area with well-drained soil and exposure to full sun or partial shade. Dig a hole about twice the size of the root ball, but no deeper. Amend the soil with organic matter if it's too sandy or clayey. Position the bamboo so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, then backfill and tamp down the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. If you are creating a screen or hedge, space the plants 5 to 10 feet apart. To help conserve moisture and discourage weeds, apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, avoiding direct contact with the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-10

Golden Bamboo is a hardy and adaptable plant that flourishes in USDA Zones 6-10. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but can adapt to a range of soil types. The plant can withstand temperatures as low as -10°F, making it a good choice for colder climates as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Golden Bamboo can reach about 20–30 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 10–15 feet or more depending on how it’s maintained. Individual canes (culms) grow upright and fairly narrow, but the plant forms dense clumps over time as it spreads.

Golden Bamboo is a fast-growing plant, capable of growing 2–4 feet or more per year once established. New shoots emerge in spring and can reach their full height within a single growing season under ideal conditions.

Golden Bamboo spreads through underground rhizomes and can expand several feet per year if left unmanaged. Without barriers or regular maintenance, it will continue to spread outward and fill in surrounding space over time.

Yes, Golden Bamboo is considered invasive in many regions because of its aggressive spreading habit. It is a running bamboo, meaning it spreads through underground rhizomes that can travel beyond the original planting area. Installing a root barrier or planting in a contained space is strongly recommended to control its growth.

Plant Golden Bamboo in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. It performs best in open areas where it has room to spread, and should be planted away from structures, sidewalks, or underground utilities unless contained.

Golden Bamboo can be controlled by installing a rhizome barrier 24–30 inches deep around the planting area or by regularly cutting back new shoots. Planting in large containers or confined spaces can also help manage its spread.

Golden Bamboo thrives in USDA Zones 6–10. It prefers warm, humid climates but can tolerate cooler temperatures once established.

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Golden Bamboo is moderately drought tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture, especially during hot or dry periods.

Yes, Golden Bamboo can be grown in large containers, which is a great way to control its spread. Keep in mind it will require more frequent watering and occasional root pruning to maintain health.

Golden Bamboo is evergreen in most climates, maintaining its green to golden-yellow canes and foliage year-round. In colder regions, it may experience some leaf drop or discoloration during winter but typically recovers in spring.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
