Endless Summer® The Original Hydrangea is a reblooming bigleaf hydrangea famous for its beautiful mophead flowers that can appear blue or pink depending on soil conditions. Blooming on both old and new wood, it provides repeated summer color on a rounded shrub with lush green foliage. Endless Summer

  • Botanical name: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmer' PP15,298
  • Bloom time: Summer through fall
  • Deciduous perennial
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade. It can tolerate more sunlight in cooler climates, while afternoon shade is especially beneficial in warmer regions.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated, particularly during summer heat. Watering frequency varies based on climate, rainfall, soil, sunlight, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 4–9. The Original performs across a broad range of climates, with its ability to flower on both old and new wood providing greater bloom reliability in colder regions. Afternoon shade and consistent moisture become increasingly important in hotter climates.

Flower color depends on your soil conditions. The Original produces classic blue flowers in sufficiently acidic soils with available aluminum and pink flowers in more alkaline conditions. Depending on your soil, flowers may also develop shades of lavender or purple between the two.

*We cannot guarantee the color bloom you will receive.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Endless Summer® The Original Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmer', is the classic reblooming bigleaf hydrangea known for its rounded mophead flowers in shades of blue or pink. Unlike traditional bigleaf hydrangeas, The Original blooms on both old and new wood, providing repeated flowers throughout the summer. Its rounded habit and lush green foliage make it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, flowering hedges, garden borders, containers, and cut flower gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Reaches approximately 3–5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Endless Summer® The Original Hydrangea when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Hydrangeas prefer consistent moisture, particularly during hot weather, but the soil should not remain constantly saturated. Once established, continue watering during extended hot or dry periods. There is no fixed watering schedule, so always check the soil first and adjust based on climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

The Original grows best with morning sun and afternoon shade. In cooler climates it can tolerate more direct sunlight, while afternoon shade becomes increasingly important in hot climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Very little pruning is necessary. Remove dead or damaged stems and spent flowers as needed, but avoid routinely cutting the entire plant back. Because The Original blooms on both old and new wood, preserving healthy stems can help maximize flowering.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring or early summer if needed. Avoid fertilizing in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
The Original is cold hardy to Zone 4, but protecting healthy stems can help preserve old-wood flower buds for the earliest blooms the following season. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the stems. Avoid cutting healthy stems back in fall.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with morning sun, afternoon shade, and moist but well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot and gently loosen any tightly bound or circling roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping mulch several inches away from the stems.

Space Endless Summer® The Original Hydrangeas approximately 3–5 feet apart, depending on the finished look you want and how quickly you'd like the plants to visually fill together.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

Endless Summer® The Original Hydrangea grows well across USDA Zones 4–9, giving it a wide range from cold northern climates to warmer southern regions. Its ability to flower on both old and new growth helps provide more reliable blooms even when winter cold or late freezes damage some of the previous season's flower buds. In warmer zones, morning sun with afternoon shade helps protect the foliage and flowers from intense heat. Consistent moisture and well-draining soil are important throughout its growing range.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Original Hydrangea reaches approximately 3–5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide at maturity, developing a full, rounded shape. Its manageable size works well for foundation plantings, flowering hedges, borders, and specimen plantings.

The Original has a moderate growth rate and can typically grow approximately 1–2 feet per year under favorable conditions. Growth varies depending on climate, sunlight, soil, moisture, winter conditions, and overall plant health.

Plant The Original in a location with morning sun, afternoon shade, consistent moisture, and well-draining soil. In cooler climates it can tolerate more direct sunlight, while afternoon shade is particularly important in hot southern climates.

Space The Original Hydrangeas approximately 3–5 feet apart, center to center. Plant toward the closer end of this range for a fuller flowering hedge or mass planting and farther apart if you'd like each shrub to maintain more individual definition.

The Original begins flowering in summer and can continue reblooming into fall. Because it produces flowers on both previous-season stems and new growth, it can provide multiple rounds of blooms throughout the growing season.

It blooms on both old and new wood. This means surviving stems from the previous year can produce flowers, while new growth emerging during the current season can develop additional blooms later in summer.

The Original produces classic blue or pink mophead flowers, with the exact color influenced by soil chemistry. Depending on growing conditions, intermediate shades of lavender and purple can also occur.

Blue flowers are encouraged by acidic soil with available aluminum. Soil pH alone does not create blue flowers—the plant must also be able to access aluminum in the soil. Make any adjustments gradually and test your soil before trying to significantly change its chemistry.

Pink flowers are encouraged by more alkaline soil conditions, which reduce the plant's ability to take up the aluminum responsible for blue coloration. Changing hydrangea flower color can take time, so don't expect an immediate change after adjusting soil conditions.

Deadheading is optional, but removing spent flowers can encourage reblooming and keep the shrub looking tidy. Cut the faded flower head off without unnecessarily removing long sections of healthy stem.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
