Endless Summer® DreamCloud® Hydrangea is a compact reblooming bigleaf hydrangea featuring bright white mophead flowers against dark green foliage. Its long-lasting flowers rebloom throughout the season and may gradually age to deep pink in certain climates, creating an elegant display from summer into fall.

  • Botanical name: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmaceight' PP36,306
  • Bloom time: Summer through fall
  • Deciduous perennial
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade. Protect from intense afternoon sun, especially in hot southern climates.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated, particularly during summer heat. Watering frequency varies based on climate, rainfall, soil, sunlight, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 4–9. DreamCloud® performs well across cool, temperate, and moderately warm climates, with afternoon shade becoming increasingly important in hotter regions.

Unlike many bigleaf hydrangeas, DreamCloud® has white flowers that do not change between blue and pink based on soil pH. The blooms emerge bright white and remain attractive for an extended period before potentially aging to deep pink in certain climates.

In warmer climates, avoid planting DreamCloud® where it will receive intense afternoon sun. Morning sun followed by afternoon shade is ideal, especially throughout the South.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Endless Summer® DreamCloud® Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmaceight' PP36,306, is a reblooming bigleaf hydrangea covered in bright white mophead flowers throughout the season. Its long-lasting blooms are slower to fade or brown than many other hydrangeas and may gradually age to a beautiful deep pink in certain climates. With a compact, rounded habit and dark green foliage, DreamCloud® is an excellent choice for borders, hedges, foundation plantings, decorative containers, and cut flower gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Reaches approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water DreamCloud® Hydrangea when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Hydrangeas prefer consistent moisture, so avoid allowing the root zone to become excessively dry, particularly during hot weather. At the same time, avoid consistently saturated soil. There is no fixed watering schedule, so always check the soil first and adjust based on climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase. DreamCloud® has medium to high water needs.

DreamCloud® grows best with morning sun and afternoon shade. In cooler climates it can tolerate more sunlight, but protection from intense afternoon sun is especially beneficial in hot southern climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
DreamCloud® requires very little pruning. If needed, prune lightly after flowering in summer and remove dead or damaged stems. Avoid heavy pruning, since preserving healthy stems helps maximize future blooms.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring or early summer if needed. Avoid fertilizing in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
DreamCloud® is hardy to Zone 4, but protecting the stems through winter can help preserve flower buds and maximize the first round of blooms the following season. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the stems. Avoid pruning the plant back in fall.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with morning sun, afternoon shade, and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot and gently loosen any tightly bound or circling roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping mulch several inches away from the stems.

Space DreamCloud® Hydrangeas approximately 3–4 feet apart to accommodate their mature width and create a full planting without excessive crowding

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

DreamCloud® Hydrangea grows best in USDA Zones 4–9, giving it a wide range from cold northern climates to warmer southern regions. Its reblooming habit and strong bud hardiness help provide reliable flowering even where winter conditions can damage some bigleaf hydrangeas. In warmer zones, morning sun with afternoon shade is especially important to protect the foliage and flowers from intense heat. Consistent moisture and good drainage help keep the plant healthy and blooming throughout the growing season.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

DreamCloud® Hydrangea reaches approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity. Its compact, rounded habit works beautifully in foundation plantings, borders, hedges, and decorative containers.

DreamCloud® has a moderate growth rate and can typically add approximately 6–12 inches of growth per year under favorable growing conditions. Growth varies depending on climate, sunlight, soil, moisture, and overall plant health.

Plant DreamCloud® where it receives morning sun and afternoon shade with consistent moisture and good drainage. Protection from intense afternoon sun is particularly important in hot southern climates.

Space DreamCloud® Hydrangeas approximately 3–4 feet apart, center to center, to accommodate their mature width. For a fuller hedge, spacing toward the closer end of that range will allow the plants to visually grow together.

DreamCloud® blooms during summer and continues reblooming into fall. Its ability to flower on both old and new wood helps extend the flowering season and provides multiple rounds of blooms.

DreamCloud® blooms on both old and new wood. Overwintered stems can produce the first flowers of the season, while new growth produces additional blooms later, giving DreamCloud® its reblooming performance.

No. Unlike blue or pink bigleaf hydrangeas, DreamCloud® produces white flowers that are not changed to blue or pink by adjusting soil pH. The white blooms can naturally age to deep pink in certain climates, but this is part of the flower's maturation rather than a soil-pH color change.

DreamCloud® performs best with morning sunlight followed by afternoon shade. In cooler climates it can tolerate more sunlight, while plants in hot climates should be protected from strong afternoon sun.

Yes. Its 3–4 foot mature height and width, rounded habit, and abundant white flowers make DreamCloud® an excellent choice for a low flowering hedge along walkways, patios, foundations, or garden borders.

DreamCloud® brings a true white flower color to the reblooming Endless Summer® lineup. Its bright white mophead blooms stay attractive for an extended period, may age to deep pink in certain climates, and are produced repeatedly on a compact 3–4 foot plant. It also shows excellent resistance to common foliar diseases including powdery mildew and Cercospora leaf spot.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
