Its attractive shape and vibrant color make it perfect for smaller gardens, patios, or as a statement piece in a larger garden.

  • Botanical Name: Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera Compacta’
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun to partial shade; more sun promotes denser growth and vibrant needle color.

WATER:
Water regularly, ensuring the soil is well-draining but moist; once a week should suffice, with more frequent watering during dry spells.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 5-8; thrives in moderate climates with well-draining, slightly acidic soil.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine, scientifically known as Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera Compacta’, is a slow-growing evergreen prized for its striking form, reddish bark, and soft green needles. With its dense, umbrella-like canopy and sculptural shape, this dwarf pine brings year-round interest to landscapes, rock gardens, and small spaces. It’s a standout specimen tree with a refined, architectural presence.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow-growing; reaches 10-12 ft tall and 16-18 ft wide

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply every 7–10 days (or when top 2 inches of soil is dry); reduce frequency once established. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. This pine thrives in full sun and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best shape, color, and needle retention.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Minimal pruning needed. Remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter to maintain its natural form.

Fertilization: Feed once in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer designed for evergreens. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.

Winter Protection: No special winter protection needed in Zones 4–7. Apply mulch around the base to insulate roots and retain moisture.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Place the tree so the root flare is level with the ground, then backfill with soil and water thoroughly. Avoid planting too deeply. Space at least 6–8 feet away from structures or other trees. Add a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk, to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-7

Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine thrives in cooler, temperate climates and is well-suited for USDA Zones 4 through 7. It tolerates cold winters and performs best in areas with well-draining soil and low humidity. Perfect for small gardens, courtyards, or Asian-inspired landscapes, this pine adds character and structure without outgrowing its space. Its slow growth makes it ideal for long-term landscape planning and minimal maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine typically grows to about 10 to 12 feet tall and 16 to 18 feet wide at maturity, though it may stay smaller if grown in a container or with regular pruning. Its naturally rounded, umbrella-like form and slow growth make it an excellent choice for small gardens, rock gardens, or as a statement plant in the landscape.

The Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine is a slow-growing tree, typically adding only 3 to 6 inches of new growth per year. Its compact, rounded form develops gradually over time, making it easy to manage in small spaces or containers. This slow growth rate is one of the reasons it’s so popular for bonsai, patio planters, and carefully styled garden designs.

The best place to plant the Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine is in a sunny spot with well-draining soil and good air circulation. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its dense shape and vibrant color. Avoid areas with heavy clay or standing water, as the roots don’t tolerate soggy conditions. It looks especially striking as a specimen tree near entryways, patios, or rock gardens, where its unique shape and reddish bark can be easily admired.

The Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine can thrive in either the ground or a planter, depending on your space and goals:

– In the ground: Ideal if you want it to reach its full size (around 10-12 feet tall and 16-18 feet wide). It’s low-maintenance once established and makes a striking focal point in landscapes or Japanese-style gardens.

– In a planter: Perfect for patios, small gardens, or if you want to keep the tree more compact. Make sure to use a large, well-draining pot and water more frequently, especially in hot weather.

Choose based on how much space you have and whether you’d like the tree to stay small or grow larger over time.

Yes, you can keep the Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine small with careful pruning and container growing. Its naturally slow growth and compact shape make it ideal for bonsai, patio pots, or small garden spaces. To maintain a smaller size, pinch back new growth (candles) in late spring and avoid heavy cuts into older wood. Growing it in a container also naturally limits its size by restricting root space. Regular care and shaping will help it stay neat and manageable for years.

The Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine thrives best in USDA Zones 4–7, where it enjoys cool to moderate climates. It prefers full sun, well-draining soil, and good air circulation. This pine does well in areas with cold winters and mild to warm summers, but it may struggle in regions with high humidity or intense, prolonged heat. It’s also tolerant of urban conditions, making it a good fit for city gardens as long as drainage is adequate.

Fertilize the Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine in early spring, just as new growth begins to emerge. Use a slow-release, balanced fertilizer labeled for evergreens or trees—something like 10-10-10. Avoid fertilizing in late summer or fall, as this can encourage new growth that may not harden off before winter. If the tree is growing in a container, it may need light fertilizing again in mid-summer to support healthy development.

You should prune the Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine in late spring to early summer, just after new growth—called candles—emerges. This is the best time to shape the tree and control its size. Gently pinch or cut back the candles to maintain its compact form. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as pines don’t regrow well from bare branches. Light touch-ups can also be done in late winter to remove any dead or damaged branches.

The Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine stands out for several unique qualities:

– Compact form: Naturally grows in a dense, rounded shape, making it perfect for small gardens, patios, or container growing.
– Striking foliage: Features soft, deep green needles in clusters that add year-round texture and color.
– Architectural structure: Displays a multi-stemmed or low-branched trunk with eye-catching reddish bark, adding visual interest even in winter.
– Low maintenance: Slow-growing and easy to care for, it requires minimal pruning and adapts well to various soil types.
– Versatile placement: Ideal for Japanese-style gardens, entryways, rock gardens, or as a specimen tree in landscapes needing a focal point.

For a Compact Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine that arrives in a 5-gallon pot and stands about 3–4 feet tall, you’ll want to size up gradually as it grows. The next ideal pot size would be a 10- to 15-gallon container. Choose a pot that’s at least 16–20 inches wide and deep, with good drainage holes. This gives the roots room to expand while still maintaining healthy growth and reducing the risk of overwatering. As the tree matures, it can be repotted every few years into larger containers if needed.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
