  • Botanical name: Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers partial sun with protection from harsh afternoon sunlight.

WATER:
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week, especially during warmer months. Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8. Bloodgood Japanese Maple thrives in moderate climates with well-draining soil and protection from extreme heat.

Note: Ensure it has adequate moisture and protection from harsh afternoon sun for best results.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Bloodgood Japanese Maple, scientifically known as Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’, is one of the most popular ornamental trees known for its deep red foliage and elegant branching structure. This classic Japanese maple features rich burgundy leaves that hold their color through summer before turning vibrant crimson in fall. With its graceful shape and year-round visual appeal, the Bloodgood Japanese Maple is a top choice for adding color, texture, and sophistication to residential landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 15–20 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, maintain consistent moisture, especially during hot or dry periods. Watering needs will vary depending on climate, soil type, and weather conditions.

Bloodgood Japanese Maple grows best in partial sun, with protection from harsh afternoon sun in warmer climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Bloodgood Japanese Maple should be pruned in late winter or early spring before leaves emerge. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches and shape the tree by trimming unwanted growth.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring. Avoid fertilizing in late summer or fall to prevent tender growth that could be damaged by winter. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder regions, mulch around the base, wrap the trunk with burlap, or provide a windbreak to protect the tree from winter damage.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level or slightly above the surrounding soil. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-8

Bloodgood Japanese Maple grows well in USDA Zones 5–8 and thrives in climates with moderate temperatures. In cooler regions, it can tolerate more full sun, while in warmer climates it benefits from protection against intense afternoon heat. This tree prefers well-draining soil and consistent moisture, making it well-suited for residential landscapes where conditions can be managed.

It can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, but in warmer regions it performs best with afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch and stress.

No. It is considered low maintenance, requiring minimal pruning and only consistent watering, especially during the first few years after planting.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
