PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Orange Bird of Paradise, scientifically known as Strelitzia reginae, is a bold and exotic tropical plant admired for its vibrant orange and blue blooms that resemble a bird in flight. With its upright, banana-like foliage and long-lasting flowers, it brings a touch of the tropics to gardens and patios. Perfect for containers or landscape beds, this dramatic plant thrives in warm climates and makes a striking statement indoors or out.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches 4–6 ft tall and 3–5 ft wide at maturity

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Generally every 5–7 days in warm weather; reduce in winter. Bird of Paradise thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. At least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal for flowering.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves at the base throughout the year. Cut flower stalks down to the base once blooms are spent to encourage new growth.

Fertilization: Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer to support foliage and flower production.

Winter Protection: In Zones 8 and below, move container plants indoors before frost. Keep them in a bright, warm space and reduce watering frequency during dormancy.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with full sun or bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than its original container. Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill, water thoroughly, and apply mulch to retain moisture, keeping it a few inches away from the stem. For containers, use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining tropical mix.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 9–11 outdoors; grow in containers and overwinter indoors in Zones 4–8

The Orange Bird of Paradise thrives in USDA Zones 9–11, where it enjoys warm temperatures and bright light year-round. In places like Southern California, Florida, and parts of Texas and Arizona, it can be grown outdoors and will bloom repeatedly. Gardeners in cooler zones can enjoy this plant by growing it in a container and moving it indoors before the first frost. Indoors, it prefers a sunny window and regular humidity. It’s an excellent choice for bringing bold color and lush foliage to patios, poolscapes, or bright interior spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Orange Bird of Paradise grows to about 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide at maturity. Its upright, tropical foliage gives it a dramatic presence in gardens and patios. When grown indoors or in containers, it may stay a bit shorter depending on pot size and growing conditions.

Orange Bird of Paradise is a moderate grower, typically adding 12 to 24 inches per year. It grows fastest in warm climates with full sun, well-draining soil, and consistent moisture. Growth may slow in cooler months or indoors without sufficient light.

Choose a sunny, sheltered location with well-draining soil. This tropical plant thrives in USDA Zones 9–11, where it can be planted outdoors year-round. For colder climates, grow it in a container that can be brought inside during the winter. Indoors or out, the plant needs at least 6 hours of bright light daily to stay healthy and eventually bloom.

If planting multiple Orange Bird of Paradise plants, space them 3 to 5 feet apart to give each plant room to spread while still maintaining a lush, full look. This spacing also improves air circulation and reduces competition for nutrients.

To plant Orange Bird of Paradise in a pot:
1. Choose a container at least 16–20 inches wide with drainage holes.
2. Use well-draining potting soil, such as a cactus or palm mix.
3. Place the container in a bright location with 6+ hours of sunlight (outdoors or near a sunny indoor window).
4. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry—don’t let it stay soggy.
5. Repot every 2–3 years as the plant grows or becomes root-bound.

Container planting is a great option for colder zones or for adding a tropical vibe to patios and decks.

Orange Bird of Paradise is low-maintenance when given the right conditions:
• Sunlight: Full sun to bright indirect light (6+ hours daily)
• Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy; allow the top inch to dry out before watering again
• Soil: Use well-draining, loamy or sandy soil
• Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer
• Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity—mist occasionally if grown indoors
• Cold protection: Bring indoors or cover if temps drop below 30°F

With proper care, you’ll enjoy bold, upright leaves and exotic blooms year after year.

Orange Bird of Paradise typically blooms in late winter through early summer, though in ideal conditions it may flower intermittently year-round. Blooming is more consistent outdoors in warm climates or indoors with bright, direct light and proper care.

If your plant isn’t blooming, common reasons include:
• Insufficient light: Needs 6+ hours of bright, direct sunlight to flower
• Age: Plants may not bloom until they’re 3 to 5 years old
• Overcrowding: If root-bound, it may stop flowering—repot if needed
• Lack of nutrients: Use a balanced fertilizer during the growing season
• Overwatering: Soggy soil can prevent blooms

Focus on sun, drainage, and regular feeding for the best chance at flowering.

Yes, the vibrant orange and blue blooms attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The flower’s unique shape is designed to offer nectar to flying pollinators, making it a beautiful and beneficial addition to pollinator-friendly gardens.

You don’t need to prune it regularly, but occasional clean-up pruning keeps it looking its best.
• Remove spent flowers and any dead or damaged leaves
• Prune any yellowing or overcrowded foliage at the base to improve airflow
• Use clean, sharp shears to avoid damaging the plant

Pruning is best done in early spring before the main bloom season begins.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
