PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Bonsai Blue Jacaranda, scientifically known as Jacaranda mimosifolia ‘Sakai01’, is a charming dwarf jacaranda celebrated for its vibrant purple‑blue trumpet‑shaped blossoms and delicate fern‑like foliage. This compact specimen lights up small gardens and containers with stunning late spring to early summer blooms, offering high ornamental appeal and easy care. Its semi‑evergreen nature and drought tolerance make it an elegant, low‑maintenance choice for patios, borders, or patioscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast-growing; reaches approximately 10–12 ft tall and 6–8 ft wide.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, water more sparingly—this plant tolerates moderate drought. This dwarf jacaranda thrives in full sunlight—provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sun daily to support its spectacular spring blooms and healthy foliage.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune annually in early spring to maintain shape and remove dead or crowded branches. Its fern-like foliage responds well to light shaping.

Fertilization: Fertilize before new spring growth begins—use a balanced fertilizer to support lush foliage and flowering.

Winter Protection: In climates cooler than Zones 9–11, container-grown Bonsai Blue Jacarandas should be moved indoors or into protected structures during frost. Use a sheltered, sunny location or greenhouse to overwinter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a sunny location with well-draining soil—slightly sandy or loamy soil is ideal. For in-ground planting, dig a hole twice the width and depth of the root ball, set the tree so the top of the root ball is level with the ground, then backfill and water thoroughly. For containers, use a pot with drainage and high-quality, well-draining mix. Mulch around the base (keeping mulch a few inches from the trunk) to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 9–11 outdoors; consider container cultivation with protection in cooler zones

Bonsai Blue Jacaranda thrives in USDA Zones 9–11, making it a perfect fit for sunny, warm regions like Southern California, Arizona, Florida, and parts of Texas. This compact tree loves the heat and handles dry conditions like a pro, thanks to its subtropical roots. If you live in a cooler climate, it grows beautifully in a container—just bring it indoors or into a greenhouse before the first frost. Its smaller size and fast bloom cycle make it a showstopper for patios, poolside landscapes, and city gardens alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Bonsai Blue Jacaranda is a compact, dwarf tree that typically reaches 10 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at maturity. Unlike full-size Jacarandas that can grow over 40 feet tall, this smaller variety is ideal for patios, small gardens, or container growing—offering all the beauty of a Jacaranda in a manageable size.

Bonsai Blue Jacaranda trees have a moderate to fast growth rate, growing 12 to 24 inches per year when planted in full sun and cared for properly. With its compact size, it fills out quickly, providing lush foliage and flowers without overwhelming your space.

Plant your Bonsai Blue Jacaranda in a location that receives full sun—at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Choose a well-draining spot in your garden or place a container on a sunny patio. This tree thrives in warm, dry climates, making it perfect for USDA Zones 9–11. If you’re in a cooler zone, grow it in a container and bring it indoors before the first frost.

For container growing, start with a pot that’s at least 16–20 inches wide and deep, with good drainage. As the tree matures, you may need to size up to a 24-inch or larger container to accommodate root growth. Choose a lightweight pot if you plan to move it indoors during winter.

Here’s a Bonsai Blue Jacaranda care guide for healthy growth and blooms:
• Sunlight: Needs full sun—6+ hours daily
• Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Let the top inch dry before watering again.
• Soil: Use well-draining soil; a sandy or loamy mix is best
• Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer
• Pruning: Light pruning helps maintain shape and size
• Cold protection: Protect from frost—bring indoors or cover if temps drop below 30°F

With the right care, this tree offers beautiful structure and vivid purple blooms, perfect for small spaces.

The Bonsai Blue Jacaranda typically blooms once a year in late spring to early summer, producing vibrant clusters of lavender-purple trumpet-shaped flowers. In warmer regions, or when grown in ideal conditions, it may produce a second, lighter bloom cycle in late summer or early fall. Consistent sun exposure and proper pruning can enhance bloom frequency.

Winter care depends on your climate:
• In Zones 9–11, it can stay outdoors year-round—just protect from frost.
• In colder zones, move the tree indoors or to a protected location once temps drop below 30°F.
• Water less frequently in winter—only when the top inch of soil is dry.
• Place near a sunny window if kept indoors, and avoid placing near cold drafts or heaters.

While semi-evergreen, it may drop some leaves in winter—this is normal and temporary.

Yes, light pruning helps maintain the Bonsai Blue Jacaranda’s compact shape and encourages healthier growth.
• Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
• Remove dead, crossing, or leggy branches
• You can also thin out the canopy slightly to improve airflow and encourage more blooms.

Avoid heavy pruning, especially in summer, as it may reduce flowering.

The key difference is size and growth habit:
• Regular Jacaranda: Grows 30–40+ feet tall, with a wide, spreading canopy. Best for large landscapes.
• Bonsai Blue Jacaranda: Grows to just 10–12 feet tall, with a more upright, compact shape ideal for small yards, patios, or containers.

Both offer stunning lavender-blue flowers, but the Bonsai Blue variety is better suited for tight spaces or urban gardening.

“Semi-evergreen” means the tree may retain some or most of its leaves year-round, but can also drop leaves in cooler temperatures or during dry spells.
• In warm climates, it may stay leafy all year.
• In colder or dry conditions, expect some leaf drop—this is normal and temporary.

It’s not fully deciduous, so it often keeps some green foliage even in winter, especially in mild zones.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
