PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Okame Cherry Tree is an early-blooming ornamental cherry prized for its vibrant pink flowers and graceful, upright form. One of the first trees to bloom in late winter to early spring, Okame Cherry fills landscapes with color before most trees leaf out. With attractive bark and bright fall foliage, this low-maintenance flowering tree provides year-round visual interest.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches a mature height of 15–25 ft and mature width of 15–20 ft

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once per week during the first growing season. After establishment, provide regular watering during dry periods, especially in summer heat. Keep soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogged conditions. Plant in full sun for the best flowering display. Partial shade is tolerated but may reduce bloom intensity.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove crossing or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce next year’s bloom.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins if needed. Overfertilizing may reduce flowering.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Hardy in its zones, though young trees benefit from mulch around the base to protect roots and regulate soil temperature.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the container. Gently loosen roots before backfilling with native soil. Water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk. Continue regular watering during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

Okame Cherry thrives in regions with mild winters and warm summers. It performs especially well in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, where it is valued for reliable early bloom and improved heat tolerance compared to some traditional cherry varieties. Well-draining soil and good airflow are important for long-term health. In colder areas within its zone range, protection from harsh winter winds can help preserve buds.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
