  • Botanical name: Juniperus scopulorum 'Wichita Blue'
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun for the best foliage color and densest growth. Tolerates light partial shade.

WATER:
Water when the top few inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 3–8. Wichita Blue Juniper Trees thrive in sunny locations with well-draining soil and adapt especially well to colder climates, dry regions, and areas with hot summers.

Note: Wichita Blue Juniper Trees naturally maintain a narrow pyramidal shape with minimal pruning, making them a low-maintenance evergreen privacy tree option for many landscapes.

Blue foliage color may vary slightly throughout the year depending on sunlight exposure, seasonal changes, and growing conditions.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Wichita Blue Juniper Tree, scientifically known as Juniperus scopulorum ‘Wichita Blue’, is a striking evergreen privacy tree known for its intense silvery-blue foliage and naturally pyramidal shape. This fast-growing juniper tree is highly valued for creating year-round privacy screens, windbreaks, and elegant landscape accents. Its drought tolerance, cold hardiness, and low-maintenance nature make it a popular choice for homeowners looking for a hardy evergreen tree with vibrant color and strong vertical growth.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast-growing evergreen tree. Typically grows around 12-18 inches per year under ideal conditions. Mature size is approximately 10-15 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during establishment, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, Wichita Blue Juniper Trees benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, and sunlight exposure.

Wichita Blue Juniper Trees grow best in full sun, where they develop their richest blue foliage color and densest growth. While they can tolerate light partial shade, too much shade may result in thinner branching and duller foliage color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning is needed to maintain its natural pyramidal shape, but any desired shaping should be done in late winter or early spring.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth, though ‘Wichita Blue’ generally thrives without much feeding. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Generally hardy and does not require special winter protection in its growing zones.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant in spring or fall. Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole as wide and slightly deeper than the root ball. Place the juniper in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Space plants 6 feet apart if planting in a row for a hedge or screen, to allow for mature width. Mulching is beneficial to retain soil moisture and reduce weed competition.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-8

The Wichita Blue Juniper Tree performs well across a wide range of climates, from cold northern regions to warmer southern landscapes. It is extremely cold hardy and tolerates snow, ice, wind, and freezing winter temperatures with ease. In hotter climates, this evergreen juniper tree benefits from good airflow and well-draining soil to prevent stress from excessive humidity. Its drought tolerance makes it an excellent option for xeriscaping, low-water landscapes, and difficult planting areas once established. This hardy evergreen privacy tree adapts well to many soil types as long as drainage is adequate.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
