PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Bushel and Berry® Raspberry Shortcake® Bush is a compact, thornless raspberry shrub bred specifically for small spaces and container growing. Unlike traditional raspberry canes, this variety grows in a neat, rounded form while producing sweet, flavorful red raspberries in summer. Easy to grow and self-fertile, Raspberry Shortcake® is perfect for patios, raised beds, and garden borders where space is limited but fresh fruit is desired.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches a mature height of 2–3 ft and mature width of 2-3 ft.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season, especially in containers. After establishment, water regularly to keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot or dry weather. Plant in full sun for best flowering and fruit production. At least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight encourages stronger growth and sweeter berries.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune after fruiting by removing spent canes at the base. New canes will produce fruit the following season. Light shaping can be done to maintain its compact form.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced fruiting-plant fertilizer in early spring and again after harvest if needed. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of fruit.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Hardy in its growing zones. In colder regions, mulch around the base to protect roots. Container-grown plants may benefit from insulation or moving to a sheltered location during extreme cold.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant in a container or in-ground location with loose, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the container. Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Continue regular watering during the first growing season to establish strong roots.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

Raspberry Shortcake® performs best in temperate climates with cold winters and warm summers. It requires a winter chill period to produce fruit, making it well-suited for Zones 4–9. This shrub thrives in full sun and well-draining soil and adapts well to container growing. In hotter regions, afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress and improve fruit quality.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
