PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Thunderstruck™ White Lightning™ Crape Myrtle Tree, scientifically known as Lagerstroemia x ‘JM4’, is a striking ornamental tree known for its dramatic dark foliage and brilliant white summer blooms. Part of the Thunderstruck™ series, this crape myrtle produces crisp white flower clusters that contrast beautifully against deep burgundy foliage. With strong disease resistance, heat tolerance, and a manageable size, White Lightning™ Crape Myrtle is an excellent choice for adding bold color and long-lasting summer interest to residential landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 20-30 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to help establish roots. Once established, crape myrtles are fairly drought tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering needs may vary depending on soil type, rainfall, and local climate conditions.

Thunderstruck™ White Lightning™ Crape Myrtle grows best in full sun, which encourages abundant flowering and maintains the deep foliage color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant to remove dead or crossing branches and shape the canopy. Minimal pruning is usually needed.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and strong flowering.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Within its recommended growing zones, this crape myrtle typically requires no special winter protection. Mulching around the base of young trees can help regulate soil moisture and temperature.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the nursery container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-10

Thunderstruck™ White Lightning™ Crape Myrtle grows well in USDA Zones 6–10 and thrives in warm climates with hot summers. Like most crape myrtles, it performs best in sunny locations with well-draining soil. This variety was bred for improved disease resistance and reliable performance in southern landscapes, making it a popular ornamental tree in regions with heat and humidity.

Yes. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators during the summer blooming season.

Crape myrtles generally require minimal pruning. If needed, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to remove dead branches or shape the tree. Because crape myrtles bloom on new growth, light pruning can encourage strong flowering during the summer season. Avoid heavy pruning, as the tree naturally develops an attractive canopy on its own.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
