PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Corkscrew Willow Tree, botanically known as Salix matsudana, is a unique ornamental tree known for its twisting branches and curled foliage. This fast-growing deciduous tree develops an eye-catching form that adds year-round visual interest to landscapes. Its distinctive corkscrew-shaped branches make it a popular choice for decorative plantings, naturalized landscapes, and winter garden structure.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; typically reaches 30–40 feet tall and 20–30 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water when the soil begins to dry, typically every 7–10 days depending on your local climate and weather. Corkscrew Willow Trees grow best in full sun where they receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Full sunlight supports faster growth and a fuller canopy.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead branches and maintain shape. Regular pruning can also encourage the tree’s characteristic twisted branching structure.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring if needed to support healthy growth.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Corkscrew Willow Trees are cold hardy within their recommended zones and typically require no winter protection once established.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth. Place the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-8

Corkscrew Willow Trees grow well in temperate climates where they can receive full sun and consistent moisture. They thrive in USDA Zones 4–8 and adapt to a variety of soil conditions, including moist or occasionally wet soils. These trees grow rapidly in open landscapes and are best suited for areas where they have plenty of space to reach their mature size.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
