Coral Bark Japanese Maple is a striking deciduous tree renowned for its vibrant coral-red bark that stands out beautifully against a backdrop of delicate, palmate leaves. Its brilliant bark color is most prominent in winter, adding a touch of elegance and interest to your landscape.

  • Botanical name: Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku'
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers partial sun with protection from harsh afternoon sunlight.

WATER:
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week, especially during warmer months. Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 5-8; thrives in temperate climates with well-draining soil

Note: The signature coral-red bark is most vibrant in winter and on younger branches, adding standout seasonal interest when other trees are dormant.

Our Jumbo Coral Bark Japanese Maple are grown in 10-gallon containers and are more mature than regular sizes, with a larger overall size, more branching, a more developed rootball, thicker trunk (caliper), and greater overall maturity. Compared to standard options, Jumbo trees feel more established at planting time and have a more refined structure.

Regular sizes are grown in 3- or 5-gallon containers. These trees are healthy and well-rooted but are less mature than Jumbo sizes and will continue to develop after planting.

The difference between regular and Jumbo sizes is in overall size, branching, rootball development, trunk thickness (caliper), and overall maturity. Jumbo Coral Bark Japanese Maple are a great option if you’re looking for a more established tree with stronger structure from the start.

Shipping:
Jumbo Coral Bark Japanese Maple are shipped burlapped, with the rootball carefully wrapped and secured with a zip tie to protect the roots and keep the tree stable during transit.

Regular sizes are shipped in their nursery pots, with the rootball wrapped in a protective plastic liner and secured with a zip tie to keep soil contained, the tree stable, and the box clean during shipping.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Coral Bark Japanese Maple, scientifically known as Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’, is a stunning ornamental tree prized for its vibrant coral-red bark that stands out beautifully in winter. This elegant Japanese maple features soft green leaves in spring and summer that turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold in fall. With its graceful branching and year-round interest, the Coral Bark Japanese Maple is a favorite for adding color, texture, and structure to residential landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 20–25 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, provide consistent moisture, especially during hot or dry periods. Watering needs will vary depending on climate, soil type, and weather conditions.

Coral Bark Japanese Maple grows best in partial sun, with protection from intense afternoon sunlight in warmer climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Coral Bark Japanese Maple should be pruned in late winter to early spring to remove damaged or diseased branches and to shape the tree if needed.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Mulch around the base in fall to protect roots, and in colder zones, consider wrapping the tree with burlap or another protective cover.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level or slightly above the surrounding soil. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-8

Coral Bark Japanese Maple grows well in USDA Zones 5–8 and thrives in climates with moderate temperatures. It performs best in locations protected from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds. In cooler climates, it can tolerate more sun exposure, while in warmer regions, some shade helps prevent leaf scorch. Well-draining soil and consistent moisture are key to maintaining healthy growth.

In warmer climates, yes. This tree benefits from afternoon shade and protection from intense heat, which helps prevent leaf scorch and keeps the foliage looking its best.

Coral Bark Japanese Maple trees prefer well-draining soil rich in organic matter. They grow best in soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH around 5.5–7.0) is ideal. Avoid heavy clay or compacted soils that hold excess water, as this can lead to root stress. Adding compost or organic matter at planting can help improve soil structure and drainage.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
