PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree, scientifically known as Rosa ‘RADsunny’, is a compact, disease-resistant rose variety trained into a small tree form. Renowned for its bright yellow blooms that gradually fade to a pale cream, this rose tree offers nonstop color from spring until frost. With proper care—adequate sunlight, moderate watering, and occasional fertilization—the Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree thrives in diverse landscapes, providing a striking focal point or accent piece with minimal maintenance.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; it typically reaches a mature height of 4 to 6 feet and a width of 3 to 4 feet when grown in the ground or in a sufficiently large container.

Sizing: Our patio rose trees are primarily utilized as outdoor patio plants and are potted. Accordingly, we measure our rose trees from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree for accuracy.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, the Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree is relatively drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture, especially during hot, dry spells. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for maximum bloom production and disease resistance.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges, removing dead or weak branches and shaping the canopy as desired. Light pruning after a flush of blooms can help encourage re-blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.

Fertilization: Use a balanced, slow-release rose fertilizer in early spring and again in midsummer to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid over-fertilization.

Winter Protection: In Zones 5 and lower, mulch heavily around the base of the trunk and consider wrapping the crown to protect it from extreme cold. Container-grown rose trees should be moved to a sheltered location or wrapped in insulating materials when severe frosts are expected.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a spot with well-drained, fertile soil and full sun exposure. Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Place the tree so that the graft union (the bulge where the rose is grafted onto the rootstock) is a couple of inches above the soil line. Backfill with soil, firming gently to remove any air pockets, and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, taking care to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot. During the first growing season, water regularly to establish a robust root system. In subsequent years, maintain moderate watering and apply a rose-specific fertilizer to support vigorous growth and abundant blooms.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

This rose tree performs best in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 through 9, where winters are cold enough for dormancy, and summers provide the warmth needed for prolific flowering. Within these zones, gardeners can enjoy a long blooming period and benefit from the Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree’s strong resistance to common rose diseases, including black spot and powdery mildew. In colder regions, winter protection may be required.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree typically grows to about 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at maturity. Its tree form features a single, upright trunk with a rounded canopy of bright yellow blooms that fade to creamy white.

It’s a compact size that makes it perfect for garden beds, patios, walkways, or containers, adding height and color without taking up too much space.

The Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree grows at a moderate rate, typically adding about 12 to 18 inches of growth per year under ideal conditions.

With full sun, regular watering, and proper fertilization, it can reach its mature size of around 3 to 5 feet tall and wide within 2 to 3 years. While it’s not a rapid grower, it fills out nicely with a bushy, rounded shape and provides continuous blooms throughout the growing season.

The best place to plant a Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree is in a sunny, well-drained spot where it has room to grow and shine. Here’s what to look for:

Full sun: Choose a location that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. This ensures strong blooming and healthy growth.

Well-draining soil: Avoid low spots or areas where water tends to pool—roses don’t like “wet feet.” Amend heavy clay soils with compost to improve drainage.

Good air circulation: Plant where there’s open space around the canopy to help prevent fungal issues. Avoid overcrowding with other shrubs or structures.

Away from foot traffic: Since rose trees have thorns, give them a little space away from walkways, play areas, or narrow paths.

Ideal planting spots include garden beds, entryways, patios, or as a focal point in landscape borders. If you’re using a container, place it in a sunny, sheltered location where you can enjoy the blooms up close.

You can plant the Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree in either a pot or in the ground, depending on your space and climate—but each option has its pros and considerations:

In the ground:
• Best for long-term growth—roots have more space to spread out.
• Performs best in full sun with well-draining soil.
• Ideal if you live in Zones 5–10, where it’s hardy year-round.
• Less frequent watering once established.

In a pot:
• Great for patios, decks, or small spaces.
• Choose a large container (at least 16–20 inches wide and deep) with good drainage.
• Needs more frequent watering and feeding, especially in hot weather.
• Easier to move or protect in winter if you’re in a colder zone.

If you’re in a colder climate (Zone 5 or borderline 6) and want the flexibility to move the plant indoors or to a sheltered area, a pot may be the better option. Otherwise, planting in the ground offers more stability and less maintenance long-term.

The Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree begins blooming in late spring and continues to bloom repeatedly through fall, often right up until the first frost.

Its blooms start out a bright, buttery yellow and gradually fade to a soft, creamy white as they age, giving the tree a multi-toned look. Thanks to its self-cleaning habit, you don’t need to deadhead it to keep the flowers coming—it naturally drops spent blooms and keeps pushing out new ones all season long.

Caring for the Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree is relatively easy, making it a great choice for both beginners and seasoned gardeners. Here’s how to keep it healthy and blooming:

Sunlight:
Plant in full sun—at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best flowering.

Watering:
Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather and soil. Let the top few inches dry out between waterings. In extreme heat or dry spells, you may need to water more often.

Soil:
Prefers well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid planting in heavy, soggy soil.

Fertilizing:
Feed with a balanced rose fertilizer in early spring when new growth starts. You can apply a light feeding every 4-6 weeks through mid-summer if desired. Always water after fertilizing.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter or early spring, cutting back about one-third of the canopy to shape the tree and encourage fresh growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches. Light pruning can also be done during the season to maintain shape.

Mulching:
Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base (not touching the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pests and Diseases:
Generally resistant to common rose problems, but keep an eye out for aphids or black spot in very humid conditions. Good air circulation and proper watering help prevent issues.

Winter Care:
In colder zones (5–6), protect the grafted trunk with burlap or frost cloth, and add mulch around the base for insulation. If in a container, move it to a sheltered spot.

With the right care, this rose tree will reward you with bright yellow blooms fading to creamy white, repeat flowering from spring through frost.

Yes, cutting back your Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree helps keep it healthy, full, and blooming strong. Here’s how and when to do it:

In late winter or early spring (before new growth): Prune back the branches by about one-third to shape the canopy and encourage fresh, vigorous growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches.

During the growing season: You can do light shaping or deadhead spent blooms to keep it looking tidy, although Knock Out roses don’t require deadheading to rebloom.

Be careful not to cut into the main trunk of the tree form, and always use clean, sharp pruners. Regular pruning helps maintain the tree’s shape and encourages more blooms throughout the season.

Yes, it’s a good idea to winterize your Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree, especially in colder climates (Zones 5-6) or if it’s planted in a container. While Knock Out roses are known for their hardiness, rose trees have a grafted trunk that’s more vulnerable to cold damage.

Here’s how to protect it:
In the ground: Apply a 3–4 inch layer of mulch around the base (but not touching the trunk) to insulate the roots. You can also wrap the trunk with burlap or frost cloth to shield it from freezing temperatures.

In containers: Move the pot to a protected area, like an unheated garage or against a sheltered wall, and insulate the container with bubble wrap or burlap. Water sparingly—just enough to keep the soil from completely drying out.

In warmer zones (7 and up), winter protection may not be necessary, but a layer of mulch is still helpful for overall plant health.

The best fertilizer for Knock Out Rose Trees is a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for roses or flowering shrubs. Look for one with an N-P-K ratio around 10-10-10 or 12-6-10. Here’s what to use and when:

In early spring: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer when new growth begins.

During the growing season: You can follow up with a liquid or water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to support continued blooming. Options labeled for roses or general-purpose bloom boosters work well.

Organic options: Compost, fish emulsion, or alfalfa meal are also great for feeding gently while improving soil health.

Always follow the label instructions, and avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to lots of foliage but fewer flowers. Water well after feeding to help the nutrients soak into the soil.

For a 3–4 ft rose tree like the Sunny Knock Out® Rose Tree, choose a pot that is at least:
• 16–20 inches in diameter
• 16–18 inches deep

This size allows enough room for the root ball to expand and provides stability for the tree’s upright growth. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot, and use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix designed for roses or flowering shrubs. Adding a layer of mulch on top can help retain moisture and keep roots cool.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
