Its full, deeply cupped flowers create a romantic, heirloom appearance that stands out in rose gardens and cottage landscapes. This repeat-blooming shrub rose produces waves of elegant yellow flowers from late spring through fall while forming a dense, rounded shrub with rich green foliage.

  • Botanical name: Rosa ‘Auspeet’
  • Bloom time: Late spring through fall
  • Decidiuous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day for the best flowering and plant vigor.

WATER:
Water deeply when the top 1–2 inches of soil become dry. Typically about 1–2 times per week during the growing season, though watering frequency may vary depending on climate, soil type, and weather.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–10. This shrub rose grows best in temperate to warm climates with full sun, well-draining soil, and good air circulation. It performs well in most regions of the United States when provided consistent watering and proper seasonal pruning.

Note: Like many English shrub roses, the Charles Darwin™ Rose may take one growing season to fully establish and produce its best blooms. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage repeat blooming throughout the season.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Charles Darwin™ Rose, scientifically known as Rosa ‘Auspeet’, is a beloved David Austin® English shrub rose admired for its large, buttery yellow blooms and rich old-rose fragrance. The deeply cupped flowers feature layers of soft petals that create a full, romantic appearance reminiscent of classic English garden roses. With excellent repeat blooming and vigorous growth, the Charles Darwin™ rose shrub is an outstanding choice for cottage gardens, mixed borders, and rose beds where gardeners want both fragrance and timeless elegance.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Typically reaches 4–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity, forming a dense, rounded shrub with upright stems and lush foliage.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

The Charles Darwin™ English rose grows well in USDA Zones 5–10, making it suitable for gardens across much of the United States. In cooler climates such as Zones 5–6, roses benefit from winter mulching to protect the crown during freezing temperatures. In warmer climates like Zones 8–10, this shrub rose may enjoy a longer bloom season and can flower continuously with proper care. Good air circulation, well-draining soil, and full sun help maintain healthy growth in all zones.

Charles Darwin™ roses grow best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily, which helps promote strong flowering and healthy foliage.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune the Charles Darwin™ rose in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead or damaged wood and shape the plant to maintain an open structure. Deadheading spent blooms during the season encourages repeat flowering and keeps the shrub tidy.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced organic rose fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer for flowering shrubs in early spring when new growth begins. A second feeding after the first flush of blooms can encourage continued flowering throughout the season.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder regions (Zones 5–6), apply 2–4 inches of mulch around the base of the plant in late fall to protect the root system from freezing temperatures. In areas with harsh winters, mound soil or mulch around the crown for additional insulation.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil to encourage strong growth and abundant flowering. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container, ensuring the plant sits at the same level it was growing in its nursery pot. Place the rose in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stems to prevent rot.

USDA GROW ZONE:

The Charles Darwin™ English rose grows well in USDA Zones 5–10, making it suitable for gardens across much of the United States. In cooler climates such as Zones 5–6, roses benefit from winter mulching to protect the crown during freezing temperatures. In warmer climates like Zones 8–10, this shrub rose may enjoy a longer bloom season and can flower continuously with proper care. All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
