The White Spruce Tree, also known as Canadian Spruce, is a hardy evergreen conifer prized for its classic pyramidal shape and dense blue-green foliage. This cold-tolerant tree provides year-round greenery, privacy, and wind protection in northern landscapes. With strong adaptability and durable growth, White Spruce is commonly planted as a windbreak, privacy screen, or specimen evergreen in larger yards and rural landscapes.

  • Botanical name: Picea glauca
  • Other common names: Canadian Spruce
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial sun.

WATER:
Water deeply once per week during establishment. Once established, water occasionally during prolonged dry periods.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 2–6. White Spruce thrives in cool climates with cold winters and performs best in full sun with well-draining soil.

Note: White Spruce grows into a large evergreen tree over time and is best suited for landscapes with plenty of space. It is commonly used for windbreaks and privacy plantings in colder climates.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

White Spruce, scientifically known as Picea glauca, is a hardy evergreen conifer native to North America that is valued for its classic pyramidal shape and dense blue-green to gray-green needles. Also known as Canadian Spruce, this cold-hardy tree provides year-round structure, privacy, and wind protection in landscapes. With its strong adaptability and durable growth habit, White Spruce is commonly used for privacy screens, windbreaks, and large landscape plantings in colder climates.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Typically grows 1-2 feet per year and can reach 40–60 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide at maturity under favorable conditions.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once per week during the first growing season to help establish the root system. After establishment, White Spruce becomes fairly drought tolerant and typically only requires watering during prolonged dry periods. Watering needs will vary depending on soil type, rainfall, local climate, and grow zone.

White Spruce grows best in full sun, though it can tolerate partial sun. Adequate sunlight promotes dense foliage and strong vertical growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
White Spruce generally requires minimal pruning due to its naturally symmetrical pyramidal shape. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed, preferably in late winter or early spring. Avoid heavy pruning, as spruce trees do not easily regenerate from old wood.

FERTILIZING:
Most White Spruce trees do not require regular fertilization once established. If soil is poor, apply a balanced slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
White Spruce is extremely cold-hardy and typically requires no special winter protection within its recommended growing zones. Young trees may benefit from mulch around the base to help regulate soil temperature and moisture.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a planting site with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing in the nursery pot. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil around the roots to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 2-6

White Spruce is extremely cold-hardy and grows well in USDA Zones 2–6. It is commonly found across northern regions of the United States and Canada where winters are long and cold. This evergreen tree thrives in cool climates and tolerates harsh winter conditions better than many other spruce species. It performs best in well-draining soils and full sun, making it ideal for northern landscapes and windbreak plantings.

White Spruce has a moderate growth rate, typically growing about 1–2 feet per year under favorable conditions.

The best place to plant White Spruce is in a full sun location with well-draining soil and enough space for the tree to reach its mature size.

For privacy screens or windbreaks, plant White Spruce trees about 12–16 feet apart. This spacing allows the trees to fill in while maintaining healthy airflow.

White Spruce trees can live 100–200 years or more under favorable growing conditions.

White Spruce grows best in well-draining soils, including sandy, loamy, or slightly acidic soils.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
