  • Botanical name: Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan'
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun

WATER:
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Approximately every 1-2 weeks. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9; thrives in a variety of climates with well-draining soil

Note: The Spartan Juniper's dense growth can make it slow to dry out after rain, so ensure it is planted in a well-draining area.

Our Jumbo Spartan Juniper are grown in 10-gallon nursery pots and are more mature than regular sizes, with a more developed rootball and fuller overall structure. Compared to standard options, Jumbo sizes offer a larger container, stronger root system, and greater maturity, giving the tree a more established presence at planting time.

Regular sizes are grown in 5-gallon nursery pots. These trees are healthy and well-rooted but are less mature than Jumbo sizes and will take more time to fill in.

The difference between regular and Jumbo sizes is in container size, rootball development, fullness, and overall maturity. Jumbo Spartan Juniper are a great option if you’re looking for a more established tree at planting time.

Shipping:
Jumbo Spartan Juniper are shipped burlapped, with the rootball carefully wrapped and secured with a zip tie to protect the roots and keep the tree stable during transit.

Regular sizes are shipped in their nursery pots, with the rootball wrapped in a protective plastic liner and secured with a zip tie to keep soil contained and the box clean during shipping.

Spartan Juniper, scientifically known as Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan', is a robust evergreen tree that provides year-round color and structure to landscapes. With its dense, upright growth habit and rich green foliage, this tree is perfect for creating privacy screens, windbreaks, and formal hedges. Its fast growth rate and low maintenance needs make it a popular choice for various landscape applications.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; mature height of 15-20 feet and width of 4-6 feet.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant. Spartan Juniper prefers full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and health.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Lightly prune Spartan Juniper in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Regular pruning helps retain its formal appearance.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage.

WINTER PROTECTION:

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Space plants 4-6 feet apart to allow for their mature spread and proper air circulation.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
