PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Yellow Itoh Peony, commonly known as Bartzella Itoh Peony, is a highly sought-after hybrid peony known for its enormous buttery-yellow blooms and exceptional garden performance. This Itoh peony combines the lush flowers of traditional herbaceous peonies with the strong stems and extended bloom period of tree peonies. With its fragrant flowers, sturdy growth habit, and vibrant foliage, Itoh Peony is a standout focal plant for borders, cottage gardens, and cut flower gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Yellow Itoh Peony typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 2.5–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during establishment, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, Itoh Peony benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, rainfall, and soil conditions.

Yellow Itoh Peony grows best in full sun, though partial afternoon shade can be beneficial in very hot climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Remove spent blooms after flowering to keep the plant tidy. In late fall or winter, cut stems back to the ground after the foliage dies back naturally.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges to support healthy blooms and foliage. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Yellow Itoh Peony is cold hardy within its recommended zones and benefits from winter dormancy. Applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base can help protect roots in colder climates.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and rich, well-draining soil. Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots, planting the crown only slightly below soil level. Avoid planting too deeply, as this can reduce blooming. Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch lightly around the base.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

Yellow Itoh Peony grows well in USDA Zones 4–9 and thrives in climates with cold winters and warm summers. It performs best in full sun with rich, well-draining soil and benefits from winter dormancy for reliable flowering. This peony is known for its strong stems, heat tolerance, and ability to thrive in a wide range of climates.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
