PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Kaleidoscope Abelia, scientifically known as Abelia × grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’, is a colorful, low-maintenance shrub prized for its vibrant, ever-changing foliage. This compact abelia features variegated leaves in shades of green, yellow, and orange that shift with the seasons, along with small, fragrant white blooms in summer. With its tidy growth habit and long-lasting color, Kaleidoscope Abelia is a popular choice for foundation plantings, borders, and low hedges.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Kaleidoscope Abelia typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 2–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, Kaleidoscope Abelia is moderately drought tolerant and typically only needs watering during extended dry periods. Watering needs will vary based on climate, soil type, and weather conditions.

Kaleidoscope Abelia grows best in full sun to partial sun, with more sun producing brighter foliage colors.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Kaleidoscope Abelia should be pruned lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, encourage vibrant new growth, and remove any dead or damaged wood.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect roots during colder months.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container. Place the plant in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
