PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Annabelle Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’, is a beloved deciduous flowering shrub known for its enormous creamy-white flower clusters and reliable summer blooms. This classic hydrangea creates a soft, romantic look in cottage gardens, foundation plantings, and landscape borders while attracting pollinators throughout the blooming season. Annabelle Hydrangea is prized for its cold hardiness, easy care, and ability to produce abundant blooms even after harsh winters.

SEASONAL DORMANCY
Perennial plants may arrive cut back or dormant depending on the season. It is normal for early spring shipments to have minimal foliage or only stems. Once planted, new growth will emerge as the plant enters its active growing season.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches a height of 3-5 feet and width of 4-6 feet.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top few inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then as needed to maintain evenly moist soil once established. Annabelle Hydrangea benefits from additional watering during periods of extreme heat or drought stress. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Annabelle Hydrangea grows best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, afternoon shade can help protect blooms and foliage from excessive summer heat.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring, cutting back to the ground to encourage robust new growth and larger flowers.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant blooms. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder zones, applying a layer of mulch around the base can help protect the roots during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade exposure. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with the surrounding soil grade. Backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply mulch around the base to help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature while keeping mulch slightly away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-9

The Annabelle Hydrangea is exceptionally hardy and adaptable, flourishing in USDA Zones 3-9. It prefers well-drained, moist soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay. Its ability to bloom reliably, even after harsh winters or in shaded conditions, makes it a versatile and dependable choice for adding splendor and visual interest to gardens across a broad spectrum of climates.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
