The New Gold Forsythia shrub is a classic spring-blooming plant known for its vibrant golden-yellow flowers that appear before the leaves in early spring. This cold-hardy shrub brings a bright burst of color to the landscape at the start of the growing season. With its fast growth and dense branching, New Gold Forsythia is often planted as a hedge, border shrub, or seasonal accent in gardens.

  • Botanical name: Forsythia ‘Northern Gold’
  • Bloom time: Early spring
  • Deciduous Perennial
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial sun.

WATER:
Water deeply once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water occasionally during extended dry periods.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 3–8. New Gold Forsythia thrives in cooler climates and grows best in sunny locations with well-draining soil.

Note: Forsythia blooms on old wood, so pruning should be done shortly after flowering in spring to avoid removing next year’s flower buds.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

New Gold Forsythia, scientifically known as Forsythia ‘Northern Gold’, is a cold-hardy flowering shrub prized for its brilliant golden-yellow blooms that appear in early spring. One of the first shrubs to flower after winter, it produces masses of bright blossoms that cover the branches before the leaves emerge. With its vigorous growth and reliable spring color, New Gold Forsythia is an excellent choice for hedges, landscape borders, and seasonal interest in colder climates.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate. Typically grows 2–3 feet per year and reaches 6–8 feet tall and 6–8 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season while the shrub establishes its root system. Once established, New Gold Forsythia becomes moderately drought tolerant and typically requires watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on soil conditions, rainfall, and local climate.

New Gold Forsythia grows best in full sun, though it can tolerate partial sun. More sunlight generally leads to heavier spring flowering.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune New Gold Forsythia immediately after flowering in spring, since flower buds form on the previous year’s growth. Removing older stems every few years helps maintain a healthy, vigorous shrub.

FERTILIZING:
Forsythia typically requires minimal fertilization. If desired, apply a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
This shrub is extremely cold hardy and generally requires no winter protection within its recommended growing zones. Applying mulch around the base can help protect roots and conserve soil moisture.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and roughly the same depth as the container so the plant sits at the same level it was growing in the nursery pot. Place the shrub in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-8

New Gold Forsythia thrives in USDA Zones 3–8 and is especially well suited to colder climates where winter temperatures can be severe. This variety was selected for improved cold hardiness and reliable spring flowering. It grows best in sunny locations with well-draining soil and moderate moisture. In warmer regions within its range, it continues to perform well with regular watering and good airflow.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
