Note: Barbara Ann Climbing Hydrangea requires a sturdy support structure such as a trellis, arbor, pergola, fence, or wall to showcase its climbing growth habit.

Flower production is typically heaviest when plants receive several hours of sunlight each day, though this vine remains one of the better flowering options for partially shaded landscapes.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Barbara Ann Climbing Hydrangea, scientifically known as Decumaria barbara ‘Barbara Ann’, is a vigorous native flowering vine prized for its fragrant creamy-white blooms and attractive climbing habit. This deciduous vine produces large clusters of hydrangea-like flowers that attract pollinators while adding elegance to fences, arbors, pergolas, and woodland gardens. Its adaptability to partial shade and native heritage make it an excellent choice for homeowners looking to add vertical interest and seasonal beauty to the landscape.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast-growing deciduous vine. Typically reaches approximately 15–30 feet long and 5–30 feet wide at maturity when grown on a support structure. Mature spread will vary depending on growing conditions, available support, and pruning practices.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Barbara Ann Climbing Hydrangea prefers consistent moisture but should not be kept overly wet. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Barbara Ann Climbing Hydrangea grows best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, afternoon shade can help protect foliage and support healthy growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune after flowering if needed to control size, shape, or direct growth. Minimal pruning is typically required beyond removing dead, damaged, or overcrowded stems.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Excessive fertilization may encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of blooms.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Barbara Ann Climbing Hydrangea is generally cold hardy throughout its recommended growing range and requires little winter protection once established. Applying mulch around the base may help insulate roots during severe winters.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Plant near a sturdy support structure such as a trellis, arbor, pergola, fence, or wall. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply mulch around the base while keeping mulch away from the main stem.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
