Serene Frost Catmint produces delicate white flowers above aromatic green foliage, creating a bright, cooling effect in sunny gardens and landscapes. This compact, mounding perennial delivers a long season of flowers while attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Its heat tolerance, deer resistance, and water-wise nature make it an appealing low-maintenance plant for borders, containers, and Mediterranean-style gardens.

  • Botanical name: Nepeta × faassenii ‘Serene Frost’
  • Bloom time: Late spring through summer, with potential flowering into fall
  • Herbaceous perennial
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sunlight. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for plentiful flowers and compact growth. Light afternoon shade can be beneficial in exceptionally hot climates.

WATER
Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Once established, water primarily during prolonged hot or dry periods; frequency varies with local climate, rainfall, soil drainage, and container conditions.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Grow Zones 4–9. Serene Frost Catmint prefers sunny, warm conditions and well-drained soil. It tolerates cold winters, summer heat, and moderate drought but should not be grown in locations with standing water or persistently soggy soil.

Note: Serene Frost Catmint is a perennial that naturally dies back following freezing temperatures and grows again from its roots in spring.

This plant is grown in Monrovia’s SUPERONE™ container, a true 1-gallon pot that provides more root volume and supports more top growth than the nursery industry’s standard “1-gallon” (#1) container, which typically holds only about 3 quarts.

Because nursery pot sizes are trade designations rather than exact measurements, two plants labeled “1 gallon” may arrive in noticeably different containers. SUPERONE™ plants are larger and more established, which is reflected in their price.

Please note: If your order includes both SUPERONE™ and standard #1 plants, the containers may differ in size even though both products are listed in the 1-gallon category. This is expected and does not mean the smaller plant was sent in the wrong size.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Serene Frost Catmint, scientifically known as Nepeta × faassenii ‘Serene Frost’, is a compact flowering perennial that brings cool, luminous color to gardens and landscapes. This distinctive white catmint produces delicate white flower spikes above aromatic green foliage, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Its tidy mounded habit, drought tolerance, and long flowering season make Serene Frost Catmint an excellent choice for sunny borders, rock gardens, containers, and water-wise landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Reaches approximately 14–16 inches tall and 16 inches wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water newly planted Serene Frost Catmint deeply about once or twice per week during its first growing season, adjusting whenever rainfall supplies adequate moisture. Allow the upper 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering again, as catmint performs poorly in consistently wet soil. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant and usually requires supplemental water only during prolonged hot or dry weather. Watering needs vary according to USDA Grow Zone, local climate, rainfall, temperature, soil type, drainage, and whether the plant is growing in the ground or a container.

Serene Frost Catmint grows and flowers best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It can tolerate light partial shade, particularly in hot climates, but excessive shade may reduce flowering and produce less compact growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Remove old or damaged stems in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. After the first major flush of white flowers, lightly shear Serene Frost Catmint or cut it back by approximately one-third to maintain its compact shape and encourage additional blooming.

FERTILIZING
Serene Frost Catmint grows best with minimal fertilizer because excessive nutrients can produce weak, floppy growth. Apply a light layer of compost or a small amount of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring only if the soil is nutrient-poor or growth appears weak. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
Established Serene Frost Catmint generally requires little winter protection in USDA Zones 4–9. Leave some top growth in place through winter, then remove it before new spring growth emerges. In colder areas, apply a light layer of mulch after the ground freezes, keeping it away from the crown to prevent excess moisture and rot. Container-grown plants may require additional protection because their roots are more exposed to freezing temperatures.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with full sun and average, rocky, sandy, or loamy soil that drains freely. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than its height. Carefully remove the Serene Frost Catmint from its container, loosen tightly circling roots, and position the crown level with the surrounding ground. Backfill with the original soil, firm it gently, and water thoroughly to settle the root zone. Space plants approximately 16 inches apart to accommodate their mature spread. Keep the soil moderately moist during establishment, but never waterlog it, and gradually reduce watering as the plant develops drought tolerance.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4–9

Serene Frost Catmint grows as a hardy herbaceous perennial in USDA Zones 4–9. It tolerates cold winters, summer heat, and moderately dry conditions once its root system is established. In cooler regions, full sun encourages vigorous growth and abundant flowers. In the hottest parts of its range, light afternoon shade may help reduce heat stress, but excellent drainage remains essential in every climate.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Serene Frost Catmint reaches approximately 14–16 inches tall and 16 inches wide at maturity. Its compact, mounded habit makes it well suited to smaller gardens, border fronts, pathways, and patio containers.

Serene Frost Catmint has a moderate growth rate. Under favorable growing conditions, it can establish a substantial flowering mound during its first growing season, although its rate of growth depends on planting time, climate, and soil conditions.

Plant Serene Frost Catmint near the front of a sunny perennial border, beside a walkway, in a rock garden, or within a water-wise landscape. A warm, open location with good air circulation and fast-draining soil provides the best conditions.

Space Serene Frost Catmint plants approximately 16 inches apart, measuring from the center of each plant. This spacing allows their mature mounds to create a full display without excessive crowding.

Serene Frost Catmint begins flowering in late spring and can continue through summer. Removing spent flower spikes encourages repeat flowering and may extend its display into fall in favorable climates.

Serene Frost Catmint has a compact, mounding growth habit and is not generally considered an aggressive spreader like culinary mint. It gradually widens from its crown but can be divided or trimmed if it exceeds its intended garden space.

Yes. The compact size of Serene Frost Catmint makes it a good choice for patio pots and mixed perennial containers. Use a container with unobstructed drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix, as consistently wet roots can damage the plant.

Serene Frost Catmint has a naturally compact, upright-mounding habit and generally remains tidy without staking. Excessive fertilizer, overly rich soil, or insufficient sunlight can encourage softer, less compact growth.

No. Serene Frost Catmint is an ornamental hybrid known botanically as Nepeta × faassenii ‘Serene Frost’, while true catnip is typically Nepeta cataria. Some cats may still show interest in the aromatic foliage of ornamental catmint.

Serene Frost Catmint pairs well with roses, lavender, Russian sage, perennial salvia, ornamental grasses, yarrow, and coneflowers. Its white flowers provide an attractive contrast to plants with purple, blue, pink, yellow, or deep burgundy coloring.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
