PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Viridis Japanese Maple, botanically known as Acer palmatum ‘Viridis’, is a graceful weeping Japanese maple prized for its finely cut, lace-like foliage and cascading branch structure. This elegant ornamental tree forms a rounded canopy of delicate green leaves that create a soft, layered appearance in the landscape. In fall, the foliage transforms into brilliant shades of gold and orange, adding seasonal interest to gardens and patios.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow to moderate growth rate; typically reaches 6–10 feet tall and 8–12 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water when the soil begins to dry, typically every 7–10 days depending on your local climate and weather. Viridis Japanese Maple prefers morning sun with afternoon shade. Partial shade helps protect the delicate foliage from leaf scorch, especially in warmer climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. This helps maintain a clean appearance and promotes healthy growth.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support robust growth and vibrant foliage.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder climates, apply mulch around the base to help protect the roots from freezing temperatures. In milder climates, minimal winter care is needed.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with partial shade to full sun and well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring it is set at the same depth as it was in the container. Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and apply a layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Space trees about 8-10 feet apart for optimal growth.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-8

Viridis Japanese Maple grows best in temperate climates with mild summers and cool winters. It thrives in USDA Zones 5–8 where it can benefit from protection from intense afternoon sun and strong winds. This ornamental tree performs well in sheltered garden settings and is especially suited for small landscapes, courtyards, and decorative planting areas. Well-draining soil and consistent moisture help maintain healthy foliage.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
