Arctic Frost Satsuma is a cold-hardy citrus tree prized for its sweet, easy-to-peel mandarins and improved tolerance to colder temperatures. This evergreen fruit tree produces fragrant white blooms followed by juicy citrus fruit that ripens during cooler months. Its manageable size, ornamental appearance, and reliable fruit production make it a favorite for home orchards, edible landscapes, and patio growing.

  • Botanical name: Citrus reticulata 'Arctic Frost'
  • Bloom Time: Spring
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11. Arctic Frost Satsuma thrives in warm climates with mild winters and performs especially well in sunny, protected planting locations with well-draining soil. Can be brought indoors during winter.

Note: Arctic Frost Satsuma is more cold tolerant than many citrus varieties, but young trees may still require protection during hard freezes, especially in colder parts of its growing range. Cold tolerant down to 15ºF.

*We cannot guarantee the Arctic Frost Satsuma Tree you receive will already be bearing fruit. This depends on the season and the overall growth pattern.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Arctic Frost Satsuma Tree, scientifically known as Citrus reticulata ‘Arctic Frost’, is a cold-hardy citrus tree prized for its sweet, easy-to-peel satsuma mandarins and improved tolerance to colder temperatures. This evergreen fruit tree produces fragrant white blossoms followed by juicy seedless to low-seed fruit with rich citrus flavor. Arctic Frost Satsuma is especially popular among homeowners in cooler citrus-growing regions looking to grow their own fresh citrus at home.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing evergreen citrus tree. Typically reaches approximately 8-12 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide at maturity, though container-grown trees may remain smaller.

Sizing: Our fruit and citrus trees are primarily utilized as outdoor patio or indoor plants and are potted. Accordingly, we measure our fruit and citrus trees from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree for accuracy.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees benefit from deep watering during hot, dry weather but dislike overly soggy soil. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees grow best in full sun, where they produce the strongest growth and best fruit production. At least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily is recommended.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter to early spring to maintain shape, remove dead or damaged branches, and promote healthy growth.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a citrus-specific fertilizer in early spring to support robust growth and fruit development. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Provide additional protection during extreme cold by covering the tree with frost cloths or moving container-grown trees indoors.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun and excellent soil drainage. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil grade. Backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply mulch around the base while keeping mulch away from the trunk to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 8-11 outdoors; or Zones 4–7 if overwintered indoors.

Arctic Frost Satsuma thrives in warm climates with mild winters but is more cold tolerant than many traditional citrus varieties. Cold tolerant down to 15ºF for brief periods. It performs especially well in southern landscapes and protected growing areas where occasional cold snaps occur. In colder portions of its growing range, supplemental freeze protection may still be needed during severe winter weather. This citrus tree grows best in sunny locations with excellent drainage and protection from harsh winter winds.

*Note: If you bring your plant inside during the cold months, it’s safe to grow in any zone*

Frequently Asked Questions

Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees typically grow about 8-12 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide at maturity, though container-grown trees often remain smaller.

Arctic Frost Satsuma trees are moderate growers, typically adding about 1 to 2 feet per year under ideal conditions.

Plant Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees in a sunny location with excellent drainage and protection from harsh winter winds. Southern or southwestern exposures are often ideal in cooler climates.

Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees are typically spaced about 8-12 feet apart to allow room for mature canopy growth and airflow.

Established Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees can tolerate brief periods of temperatures in the mid to upper teens once mature and properly acclimated, though damage may still occur during prolonged freezes or extreme cold events. Young trees are more sensitive and should be protected during hard freezes.

Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees are typically fertilized during the active growing season from spring through summer using a citrus-specific fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

Many Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees can begin producing fruit within 1-3 years after planting depending on tree maturity, growing conditions, sunlight, and overall care. Younger trees may take additional time to establish before producing heavier crops.

Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees typically bloom in spring with fragrant white citrus blossoms. Bloom timing may vary slightly depending on climate and seasonal temperatures.

Both Arctic Frost and Orange Frost are cold-hardy satsuma varieties developed for improved cold tolerance, but Arctic Frost is generally considered slightly more cold hardy. Arctic Frost Satsuma typically produces slightly larger fruit with rich sweet flavor, while Orange Frost often has a slightly more compact growth habit and deep orange fruit coloration.

No. Arctic Frost Satsuma Trees are self-pollinating, meaning they do not require another citrus tree nearby to produce fruit. A single tree can successfully produce satsumas on its own under proper growing conditions.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
