  • Bloom time: Early to midsummer
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun to part shade.

Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods. Watering frequency varies depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9. Gatsby Gal thrives in a wide range of climates and performs beautifully in woodland gardens, foundation plantings, mixed borders, and native landscapes.

Note: Gatsby Gal blooms on old wood, so avoid pruning after midsummer or during fall, winter, and early spring if you want to enjoy flowers the following year.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Gatsby Gal® Oakleaf Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea quercifolia 'Brenhill', is a striking native shrub prized for its large, upright white flower panicles, bold oak-shaped foliage, and spectacular fall color. Blooming from early to midsummer, the creamy white flowers gradually mature to soft pink before drying beautifully for extended seasonal interest. With its refined habit, exceptional foliage, and four-season beauty, Gatsby Gal is an outstanding choice for woodland gardens, foundation plantings, mixed borders, and naturalized landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing deciduous flowering shrub. Typically reaches approximately 5–6 feet tall and 5–6 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, provide deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

Gatsby Gal Oakleaf Hydrangea grows best in full sun to part shade. In cooler climates, full sun encourages the best flowering, while afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter regions.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune only if needed immediately after flowering. Gatsby Gal blooms on old wood, meaning next year's flower buds develop shortly after the current season's blooms fade. Avoid pruning in fall, winter, or early spring, as this may remove next year's flowers.

FERTILIZING
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if desired to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
Gatsby Gal is cold hardy throughout its growing range. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help conserve moisture and insulate the roots during winter, particularly during the first growing season.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Gatsby Gal Oakleaf Hydrangea in full sun to part shade with well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and no deeper than the rootball itself. Position the crown level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch while keeping it several inches away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Gatsby Gal Oakleaf Hydrangea thrives in USDA Zones 5–9 and performs best in full sun to part shade with well-draining soil. It is native to the southeastern United States and is well adapted to a wide range of climates. In hotter regions, afternoon shade helps protect the foliage and flowers during the peak of summer.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
