Armandii Snowdrift Clematis is an elegant evergreen vine that transforms vertical spaces with masses of fragrant white flowers each spring. Its glossy, leathery foliage provides year-round interest, while the vigorous climbing habit quickly covers pergolas, arbors, fences, and trellises. Beautiful, fragrant, and easy to grow in mild climates, it's one of the few evergreen clematis varieties available.

  • Botanical name: Clematis armandii 'Snowdrift'
  • Bloom time: Early spring
  • Evergreen in mild climates
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun to part shade.

WATER
Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods. Watering frequency varies depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Zones 7–9. Snowdrift Clematis thrives in mild climates and is an excellent choice for pergolas, trellises, fences, arbors, and walls.

Note: Snowdrift Clematis blooms on old wood, so prune only after flowering if needed. For the healthiest growth, provide a support structure for climbing and keep the root zone cool with mulch or nearby low-growing plants.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Armandii Snowdrift Clematis, scientifically known as Clematis armandii 'Snowdrift', is a vigorous evergreen flowering vine prized for its masses of fragrant white blooms and year-round glossy foliage. Blooming in early spring, its star-shaped flowers blanket the vine with a sweet fragrance while providing a stunning display on fences, trellises, pergolas, and arbors. Unlike most clematis varieties, Snowdrift remains evergreen in mild climates, offering beauty long after the flowers have faded.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast-growing evergreen flowering vine. Typically reaches 20–30 feet long with a spread of 6–10 feet, depending on the support structure.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

Snowdrift Clematis grows best in full sun to part shade, receiving at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best flowering. In hotter climates, keeping the roots cool with mulch or nearby groundcovers is beneficial.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune immediately after flowering if needed to control size or shape. Snowdrift blooms on old wood, so avoid heavy pruning later in the season, as this may remove next year's flower buds.

FERTILIZING
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if desired. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
In the colder parts of its growing range, apply mulch around the base to help insulate the roots during winter. In areas with unusually harsh freezes, some foliage damage may occur, but established plants often recover well in spring.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Snowdrift Clematis in full sun to part shade with well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and no deeper than the rootball itself. Position the crown level with or slightly below the surrounding soil, backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and mulch around the base to help keep the roots cool.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-9

Armandii Snowdrift Clematis thrives in USDA Zones 7–9 and performs best in full sun to part shade with well-draining soil. It appreciates cool roots and warm sunshine, making it an excellent choice for climbing over pergolas, fences, arbors, walls, and trellises in mild climates.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
