SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun.

WATER:
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry. Approximately once per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Allow soil to dry slightly between watering. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 8–10. French Lavender thrives in warm, sunny climates with well-draining soil and low humidity.

Note: French Lavender prefers excellent drainage and may struggle in consistently wet or poorly draining soil.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

French Lavender, scientifically known as Lavandula dentata, is a fragrant evergreen shrub known for its soft gray-green foliage and aromatic purple flower spikes. Unlike English lavender, French Lavender features distinctive serrated leaves and blooms over an extended season in warm climates. With its drought tolerance, fragrance, and compact form, this lavender is a popular choice for borders, containers, pollinator gardens, and Mediterranean-style landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. French Lavender typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 2–3 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. During establishment, water approximately once or twice per week, then reduce frequency once established. Lavender prefers drier conditions, and watering frequency will vary depending on climate, rainfall, soil type, and container vs. in-ground planting.

French Lavender grows best in full sun, which promotes healthy growth and abundant blooms.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage additional blooms. Avoid cutting into old woody growth, as lavender may not regrow well from heavily pruned stems.

FERTILIZING:
Lavender typically requires very little fertilizer. If needed, apply a light, balanced fertilizer in spring. Overfertilizing can reduce flowering and fragrance. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
French Lavender is less cold hardy than English lavender and may need protection in colder climates. In cooler regions, apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base and consider container growing for easier winter protection.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun and very well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container. Place the plant in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting, then allow the soil to dry slightly between future waterings. Avoid overly rich or heavy soils.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 8-10

French Lavender grows best in USDA Zones 8–10 and thrives in warm, dry climates with good airflow and well-draining soil. It performs especially well in Mediterranean and coastal climates where winters are mild and summers are sunny. In colder regions, it is often grown in containers and protected during winter.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
