Blue Flame Agave is a stunning evergreen succulent prized for its smooth blue-green foliage and elegant sculptural form. This drought-tolerant agave adds bold texture and architectural interest to xeriscapes, modern landscapes, rock gardens, and decorative containers. Its softer leaf edges compared to many agaves make it a popular low-maintenance choice for stylish outdoor spaces.

  • Botanical name: Agave ‘Blue Flame’
  • Bloom time: Mature plants may bloom after many years
  • Evergreen succulent
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun to partial shade.

WATER:
Water when the soil becomes mostly dry. Approximately once per week during establishment, then much less frequently once established. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11. Blue Flame Agave thrives in warm, dry climates and performs especially well in coastal, Mediterranean, and desert-inspired landscapes with well-draining soil.

Note: Blue Flame Agave has smoother leaf margins than many traditional agave varieties, making it a softer-looking option for modern landscapes and container gardens.

Although less aggressive than some agaves, the leaf tips may still have small terminal points, so avoid planting directly near walkways or tight spaces.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Blue Flame Agave, scientifically known as Agave ‘Blue Flame’, is a striking architectural succulent admired for its smooth blue-green foliage and graceful rosette shape. Unlike many agave varieties, Blue Flame Agave features softer leaf margins with minimal spines, making it a popular choice for modern landscapes, desert gardens, and container plantings. Its drought tolerance, sculptural appearance, and low-maintenance growth habit make it an excellent option for water-wise landscapes and contemporary outdoor spaces.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing succulent. Typically reaches approximately 3-5 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the soil becomes mostly dry. Approximately once per week during establishment, then much less frequently once established. Blue Flame Agave is highly drought tolerant and prefers drier conditions over consistently wet soil. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Blue Flame Agave grows best in full sun to partial shade. In especially hot climates, partial afternoon shade can help protect foliage from extreme heat stress.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Blue Flame Agave requires very little pruning. Remove older or damaged lower leaves as needed to maintain a clean appearance and healthy growth.

FERTILIZING:
Blue Flame Agave generally requires minimal fertilization and thrives in lean, well-draining soils. Apply a light balanced fertilizer during the growing season if desired. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder areas near the edge of its growing range, protect Blue Flame Agave from prolonged freezing temperatures and excessive winter moisture. Container-grown plants may be moved to sheltered locations during severe cold events.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Blue Flame Agave in an area with excellent drainage and full sun to partial shade exposure. Dig a hole slightly wider than the rootball and position the plant so the crown sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil grade. Backfill with native soil and avoid overwatering during establishment. Mulch lightly around the base while keeping mulch away from the crown to reduce excess moisture buildup.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 8-11

Blue Flame Agave thrives in warm climates with excellent drainage and abundant sunlight. It performs especially well in dry, Mediterranean, and coastal environments where excessive moisture is limited. In hotter inland climates, some afternoon shade may help reduce leaf stress during extreme heat. This agave is more cold sensitive than some other agave varieties and benefits from protection during prolonged hard freezes.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
