PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Snow White Camellia, scientifically known as Camellia japonica ‘Snow White’, is a striking evergreen shrub that produces large, pure white blooms with layered, rose-like petals. Blooming in late winter to early spring, this elegant camellia adds timeless beauty and structure to shaded gardens and borders. With its glossy green foliage and refined flower form, it’s a favorite for foundation plantings, woodland gardens, and formal landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow to moderate growth rate; reaches 6–10 ft tall and 5–8 ft wide when mature

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry. Typically every 5–7 days during dry periods. Keep soil evenly moist during bud and bloom season. Snow White Camellia grows best in filtered sunlight or partial shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch and bud drop.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning in fall or winter to preserve buds.

Fertilization: Feed with an acid-loving plant fertilizer in spring, after bloom, and again in midsummer. Avoid fertilizing in fall.

Winter Protection: In Zone 7 or exposed locations, protect from harsh winter winds with burlap or plant near a wall or structure. Mulch to insulate roots during cold weather.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a partially shaded area with acidic, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Place the camellia with the top of the root ball slightly above ground level to ensure proper drainage. Backfill, water deeply, and apply mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature—keeping mulch a few inches from the base. Avoid planting too deeply, as camellias are sensitive to poor drainage and root rot.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-10

Snow White Camellia grows well in USDA Zones 7–10, thriving in areas with mild winters and protection from harsh afternoon sun. It’s ideal for the southeastern U.S., including parts of the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and East Texas, where acidic soils and filtered light are common. This camellia appreciates consistent moisture, good air circulation, and slightly acidic, well-drained soil. In cooler climates, it should be planted in a protected area to avoid cold wind and late frost damage to flower buds.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Snow White Camellia typically grows to 6 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide, forming a dense, upright shrub with glossy evergreen foliage. With time and proper care, it can be maintained as a compact hedge, flowering screen, or standalone specimen in shaded garden areas.

Camellia japonica is a slow to moderate grower, typically adding 6 to 12 inches of growth per year. While it takes a few seasons to reach full size, its elegant shape and glossy foliage make it attractive year-round—even when not in bloom.

Plant Camellia japonica in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, or dappled light throughout the day. It prefers acidic, well-draining soil and thrives in USDA Zones 7–9. Avoid harsh afternoon sun or windy, exposed areas—these can scorch leaves and reduce flower production.

For a flowering hedge or privacy screen, space Camellia japonica shrubs 4 to 6 feet apart, center to center. This allows room for mature growth while ensuring the plants will fill in for a lush, evergreen barrier over time.

To encourage more blooms:
• Ensure proper light: Morning sun or bright indirect light encourages flowering.
• Use acidic fertilizer formulated for camellias or azaleas, applied after flowering ends in spring and again in early summer.
• Avoid over-pruning, especially in late summer or fall when next season’s buds are forming.
• Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy—drought stress can reduce flower production.

Camellia japonica sets its buds in late summer for the following season, so consistent care throughout the year is key to better blooming.

Yes—Camellia japonica performs well in a large container, especially if you want to control soil acidity or protect it in winter:
• Use a pot at least 18–24 inches wide, with drainage holes.
• Choose an acidic, well-draining potting mix (such as camellia or azalea soil).
• Place the container in bright shade or filtered sun.
• Water consistently, and feed with a camellia-specific fertilizer in spring and summer.
• In colder zones, move containers to a protected area in winter.

Container growing is ideal for patios, shaded balconies, or small gardens.

Camellia japonica requires minimal pruning, but a light trim helps maintain its shape and health:
• Prune immediately after blooming, before new buds form in summer.
• Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
• Thin the interior slightly to improve air circulation and reduce disease risk.

Avoid hard pruning, which can reduce the following year’s flower display.

Camellia japonica is low-maintenance when planted in the right conditions:
• Light: Morning sun or partial shade
• Soil: Acidic, rich, and well-drained
• Water: Keep soil evenly moist, especially in dry spells; avoid overwatering
• Fertilizer: Use a slow-release, acid-loving plant fertilizer after bloom
• Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect roots

With proper care, this evergreen shrub will reward you with classic white blooms and year-round structure.

In most of Zones 7–9, Camellia japonica does not require heavy winter protection. However:
• In colder zones or unusually harsh winters, apply mulch around the root zone to insulate against freeze-thaw cycles.
• Protect young plants or potted specimens with frost cloth or by moving them to sheltered areas during hard freezes.
• Avoid late-season fertilizing, which can lead to tender new growth vulnerable to cold damage.

Established camellias are surprisingly cold-tolerant, but protection is helpful during extreme cold snaps.

Snow White Camellia typically blooms in late winter to early spring—usually January through March, depending on your zone. The pure white, rose-like flowers emerge while most of the garden is still dormant, adding elegant color and fragrance when you need it most.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
