PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Felix® Magnolia, scientifically known as Magnolia × ‘JURmag2’ PPAF, is a standout deciduous tree prized for its large, fragrant hot‑pink blooms in early spring and compact, upright form. With its striking flower show and manageable size, it offers dramatic color and garden appeal without overwhelming the space.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; matures to about 16–22 feet tall and 5–7 feet wide.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a strong root system. After establishment, water deeply when the soil is dry, especially during heat or drought conditions. Felix® Magnolia thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day to maximize bloom production and flower color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune Felix® Magnolia in late winter or early spring while it’s dormant to remove any dead or damaged branches and maintain its upright form. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce flowering.

Fertilization: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow‑release fertilizer to support healthy growth and abundant blooms. Use a formulation suitable for flowering trees and shrubs, and follow label instructions for rates.

Winter Protection: Although hardy to Zone 5, young trees may benefit from a layer of mulch around the root zone in late fall to help moderate soil temperature and retain moisture. In particularly cold, windy sites, a temporary wind‑screen or wrapping may help protect emerging flower buds the following spring.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

When planting Felix® Magnolia, dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Position the tree so the top of its root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Gently loosen any bundled roots, backfill with native soil (amending if necessary for improved drainage and slightly acidic pH), and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Apply a 2‑3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot. Ensure the planting site receives full sun and offers well‑drained soil. Stake the young tree only if necessary to protect from high winds, and monitor soil moisture closely during its first few seasons.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

This tree is well‑suited to USDA Zones 5 through 9, making it adaptable from cooler temperate regions to warmer climates. It tolerates winter chill (Zone 5) and thrives in mild‑to‑warm summers—ideal for many U.S. landscapes. Its compact size and ability to deliver vibrant, early‑season blooms make it a prized specimen tree for smaller gardens and urban settings alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Felix Magnolia Tree grows to about 16–22 feet tall and 5–7 feet wide, with a narrow, upright form that fits well in smaller yards or along pathways.

Felix Magnolia has a moderate growth rate, typically growing 12–18 inches per year under ideal conditions.

Plant your Felix Magnolia in a sunny, well-drained spot with protection from strong winds. It’s perfect for front yards, entryways, or as a statement tree in smaller spaces.

Felix Magnolia trees are low-maintenance but benefit from consistent care:
• Watering: Water deeply once or twice per week during the first year. Reduce frequency once established.
• Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours per day) to bloom well.
• Soil: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil.
• Pruning: Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches.
• Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
• Mulching: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect roots.

Felix Magnolia blooms in early spring, producing large, fragrant pink flowers before the leaves emerge.

The best time to plant is in early spring or fall, when temperatures are mild and the tree can establish roots before extreme weather.

Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and shape lightly if needed. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve flower production.

Felix Magnolia is hardy in Zones 5–9. In colder climates, mulch around the root zone in fall to insulate roots and protect from freeze-thaw cycles. Protect flower buds from late frosts if needed.

Yes, fertilize once a year in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering trees and shrubs. This helps support healthy growth and consistent blooming.

The tree itself is frost-hardy to Zone 5, but flower buds may be vulnerable to late spring frosts. If a freeze is expected while buds are forming, consider covering the tree overnight with breathable fabric.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
