The Chanticleer Pear Tree is a standout ornamental pear known for its upright, narrow form and stunning seasonal beauty. In early spring, it fills with clouds of white blossoms that draw pollinators, followed by glossy green leaves that stay clean and full through summer. When fall arrives, the Chanticleer Pear lights up the landscape with red, orange, and purple tones, making it an excellent choice for adding year-round visual interest without taking up much space.

Note: The Chanticleer Pear Tree maintains a tidy, upright shape ideal for driveways, sidewalk strips, and tighter planting areas, but still needs room for height as it matures.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Chanticleer Pear Tree is a beloved ornamental tree known for its upright, pyramidal shape and stunning three-season display. In early spring, it bursts with clusters of white flowers, followed by glossy green summer foliage that transitions into fiery shades of red, purple, and bronze in fall. This fast-growing, low-maintenance flowering tree is perfect for narrow yards, driveways, and streetscapes where space is limited but visual impact is desired.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; mature height 35–45 ft and mature width 15–25 ft (upright and narrow form).

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once per week during the first growing season to establish roots. After establishment, water during prolonged dry periods, especially in summer heat. Consistent moisture encourages better growth and flowering. Chanticleer Pear Trees grow best in full sun but tolerate partial shade with slightly lighter blooming. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight ensures stronger flowering and better fall color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant, removing crossing, crowded, or weak branches. Light structural pruning helps maintain its upright form and long-term strength. Avoid heavy pruning in summer.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support strong growth and flowering. Mulch annually to help conserve moisture and enrich the soil naturally.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Chanticleer Pears are reliably hardy in Zones 5–8. Young trees benefit from a mulched root zone and protection from harsh winter winds. Avoid piling mulch against the trunk to prevent rot.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the soil line. Set the Chanticleer Pear Tree in place so the top of the root ball sits slightly above the surrounding soil, then backfill with native soil and water thoroughly. Finish with a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from direct contact with the trunk. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-8

The Chanticleer Pear adapts to a wide range of climates across the U.S. It thrives in areas with moderately cold winters and warm summers and is especially valued in urban settings where air pollution or poor soil may limit other trees. Heat tolerance is strong through Zone 8, and in cooler zones, it maintains excellent seasonal color and structure. Its reliable performance and disease resistance make it one of the most planted ornamental pears in residential and commercial landscapes.

A Chanticleer Pear typically reaches 35–45 feet tall and 15–25 feet wide at maturity, forming a tall, narrow pyramidal shape.

The Chanticleer Pear Tree has a fast growth rate and can add 2–3 feet of height per year in ideal conditions.

Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil. Choose a spot where the tree has room to grow upward without interference from eaves, wires, or nearby trees.

In spring, it produces clusters of bright white blossoms. Summer brings glossy green foliage, and fall displays vivid reds, oranges, and purples. The tree drops its leaves in winter and goes dormant until spring returns.

Plant at least 15–20 feet from homes, garages, patios, or fences to allow proper canopy spread and root space.

Space trees 20–25 feet apart to give each room to grow upright while maintaining good airflow between trunks and branches.

No — Chanticleer Pears produce very little to no noticeable fruit. They are chosen specifically for their clean growth habit.

Chanticleer Pear Trees are much more resistant to fire blight and branch splitting than older ornamental pears. Their strong structure and upright form reduce storms or wind-related limb failure.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
