  • Botanical name: Rosa ‘Auswhirl’
  • Bloom time: Spring through fall
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun.

WATER:
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Approximately 1–2 times per week, especially during hot weather and active blooming. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–11. The Poet’s Wife® Rose thrives in sunny locations with good airflow and well-draining soil.

Note: The rich yellow blooms may gradually soften to a lighter buttery yellow as they mature and open fully.

David Austin® The Poet’s Wife® Rose Shrub, scientifically known as Rosa ‘Auswhirl’, is a stunning English shrub rose known for its rich yellow blooms and exceptionally strong fragrance. This repeat-blooming rose produces full, cupped flowers with a deep golden center that gradually softens as blooms mature. With its intense fruity scent and compact, rounded growth habit, The Poet’s Wife® Rose is a standout addition to cottage gardens, borders, and cutting gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. The Poet’s Wife® Rose typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide at maturity.

Water deeply 1–2 times per week, especially during the growing season and periods of heat. Roses prefer consistent moisture without soggy soil, and watering frequency will vary depending on climate, rainfall, and soil conditions.

The Poet’s Wife® Rose grows best in full sun, which promotes strong flowering and healthy foliage.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container. Place the rose in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from the crown of the plant.

PLANT CARE

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead or weak stems and lightly shape the shrub to improve airflow and encourage repeat blooming. Deadheading spent flowers throughout the season can encourage additional blooms.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced rose fertilizer in early spring, then continue feeding throughout the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
The Poet’s Wife® Rose is cold hardy within its recommended zones, but applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base in colder climates can help protect roots during winter.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
