The Taylor Juniper is a tall, narrow evergreen with dense, upright foliage that provides a sleek, columnar appearance. Its rich green color and compact growth habit make it an excellent choice for creating privacy screens or vertical accents in your landscape.

  • Botanical name: Juniperus virginiana 'Taylor'
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun

WATER:
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Approximately every 1-2 weeks. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9; thrives in well-draining soil

Note: The Taylor Juniper is generally low-maintenance but may require occasional pruning to maintain its columnar shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.

Our Jumbo Taylor Juniper are grown in 10-gallon nursery pots and are more mature than regular sizes, with a fuller overall structure and a more developed root system. While Taylor Juniper is naturally narrow and columnar, Jumbo sizes feel more established at planting time and hold their shape more confidently than smaller options.

Regular sizes are grown in 5-gallon nursery pots. These trees are healthy and well-rooted but are less mature than Jumbo sizes and will take more time to establish after planting.

The difference between regular and Jumbo sizes is in container size, root development, and overall maturity. Jumbo Taylor Juniper are a great option if you want a more established tree right away while maintaining the naturally slender form this variety is known for.

Shipping:
Jumbo Taylor Juniper are shipped burlapped, with the rootball carefully wrapped and secured with a zip tie to protect the roots and keep the tree stable during transit.

Regular sizes are shipped in their nursery pots, with the rootball wrapped in a protective plastic liner and secured with a zip tie to keep soil contained and the box clean during shipping.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Taylor Juniper, scientifically known as Juniperus virginiana 'Taylor', is an elegant columnar evergreen that stands tall in gardens and landscapes. This plant is praised for its slender, upright growth and the bluish-green hue of its foliage, providing year-round interest. With attentive care, Taylor Juniper is adaptable to various climates and becomes an iconic feature, making it a sought-after choice for gardeners desiring a touch of timeless sophistication in their outdoor spaces.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate; reaches a mature height of 15-20 ft and about 3-4 ft wide.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

The Taylor Juniper thrives in full to partial sunlight, so ensure it receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily. When it comes to watering, provide consistent moisture during the tree's establishment period, especially in hot weather. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering. Monitor the soil moisture and water as needed, aiming to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Taylor Juniper requires minimal pruning. Lightly trim in early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or unwanted branches.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing to prevent excessive growth and maintain its natural form.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Cold-hardy, but in extreme winter conditions, provide a windbreak or wrap young trees with burlap to prevent windburn.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Planting the Taylor Juniper (Juniperus virginiana 'Taylor') is a breeze! Choose a location with well-draining soil and full to partial sunlight for optimal growth. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball, then gently place the tree in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding ground. Backfill the hole with soil and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. During the first year, regular watering is crucial to help the tree establish its root system. With proper care and attention, your Taylor Juniper will thrive and become a magnificent addition to your landscape.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-9

The Taylor Juniper is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3 to 9. This hardy tree can withstand a wide range of temperatures and is well-adapted to various climates, making it a versatile choice for gardeners across the United States.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
