PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Miho Satsuma Tree, scientifically known as Citrus reticulata ‘Miho’, is a popular cold-hardy citrus tree known for producing sweet, easy-to-peel mandarins. This early-season variety yields seedless to low-seed fruit with juicy flesh and mild flavor. With its compact size and reliable production, the Miho Satsuma Tree is an excellent choice for home orchards, patio containers, and warm-climate landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Typically grow 1–2 feet per year and reach 8–12 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide at maturity.

Sizing: Our fruit and citrus trees are primarily utilized as outdoor patio or indoor plants and are potted. Accordingly, we measure our fruit and citrus trees from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree for accuracy.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply 1–2 times per week, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry slightly between watering. Citrus trees prefer consistent moisture but not soggy soil, and watering frequency will vary depending on climate, temperature, and soil conditions.

Miho Satsuma Trees grow best in full sun, which promotes strong growth and sweet fruit development.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crowded branches and maintain shape. Minimal pruning is typically needed.

FERTILIZING:
Use a citrus-specific fertilizer beginning in early spring and continuing through the growing season to support healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:

In colder areas of Zone 8, protect the tree during freezes with frost cloth or by moving container plants indoors. Mulching around the base can help protect roots.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 8-11; or Zones 4-7 if overwintered indoors

Miho Satsuma Trees grow best in USDA Zones 8–11 and are among the more cold-tolerant citrus varieties. They thrive in warm climates with mild winters and hot summers. In Zone 8, they can tolerate light freezes with protection, while in colder regions they are often grown in containers and brought indoors during winter. Well-draining soil and full sun are essential for healthy growth and fruit production.

Yes. The fruit is usually seedless or contains very few seeds, making it easy to eat.

Yes. This variety grows well in large containers, making it a great option for patios or colder climates.

The tree typically blooms for 1–2 weeks in spring, producing fragrant white flowers.

Miho Satsuma Trees are one of the more cold-hardy citrus varieties and can tolerate temperatures down to about 10–15°F when fully mature and dormant. However, temperatures at or below 15°F may cause damage without protection, especially for younger trees. Cold tolerance is highest when the tree is fully dormant, while sudden early or late freezes during active growth can be more harmful. For best results, protect trees with frost blankets during hard freezes, and consider growing in a container so it can be moved indoors when temperatures drop below 25°F.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
