PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Vinca Minor Periwinkle, scientifically known as Vinca minor ‘Bowles’, is a vigorous evergreen ground cover prized for its glossy green foliage and abundant violet-blue flowers. This low-growing perennial spreads to create a dense carpet of color and texture, making it an excellent choice for slopes, borders, woodland gardens, and difficult-to-cover areas. Its shade tolerance, low-maintenance nature, and long-lasting evergreen foliage make it a popular landscape solution for homeowners.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast-growing evergreen ground cover. Typically reaches approximately 4–6 inches tall and spreads 12–24 inches or more per plant, forming a dense mat over time.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Vinca Minor Periwinkle becomes fairly drought tolerant over time but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Vinca Minor Periwinkle grows best in full sun to partial shade but tolerates full shade very well. Flowering is typically heaviest when plants receive some sunlight during the day.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Vinca Minor Periwinkle requires very little pruning. Trim or edge as needed to control spread, refresh appearance, or keep the plant within landscape boundaries.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring if desired to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Vinca Minor Periwinkle is generally cold hardy throughout its recommended growing range and requires little winter protection once established. Mulch may be applied around newly planted areas to help protect roots during the first winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Vinca Minor Periwinkle in well-draining soil in full sun, partial shade, or full shade. Dig a hole slightly wider than the rootball and plant so the crown sits level with the surrounding soil. Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch around the area to help conserve moisture while the plants establish. Space plants appropriately to allow them to fill in and create a dense ground cover over time.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
