Young trees may take a few seasons to develop their fullest flowering potential as they become established in the landscape.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Texas Redbud Tree, scientifically known as Cercis canadensis var. texensis, is a native flowering tree prized for its vibrant pink spring blooms, glossy heart-shaped leaves, and exceptional heat tolerance. This ornamental tree provides stunning early-season color before the foliage emerges, creating a striking focal point in residential landscapes. Its compact size, drought tolerance, and adaptability to Texas and southern climates make it a popular choice for homeowners seeking year-round beauty and native charm.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing deciduous ornamental tree. Typically reaches approximately 10–20 feet tall and 10–20 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Texas Redbud is more drought tolerant than many ornamental flowering trees once mature. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Texas Redbud grows best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help reduce stress during extreme summer heat, though mature trees tolerate full sun well.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune during dormancy to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain a strong branching structure. Minimal pruning is typically required once the tree is established.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if desired to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Texas Redbud is generally cold hardy throughout its recommended growing range and requires little winter protection once established. Mulching around the root zone can help regulate soil temperatures and conserve moisture.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply mulch around the base while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

Texas Redbud thrives in warm climates and is particularly well adapted to the heat, drought, and alkaline soils commonly found throughout Texas and the southern United States. It performs well in a variety of landscape settings, from urban yards to naturalized gardens. While it tolerates summer heat exceptionally well, it also remains cold hardy throughout much of its growing range. Well-draining soil and proper airflow help support long-term health and vigor.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
