The Shademaster Honeylocust Tree (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Shademaster’) is an excellent shade tree choice with finely textured, deep green foliage that casts a light, dappled canopy. This thornless, largely seedless cultivar offers graceful form and year‑round landscape value without the mess of large pods. Shademaster’s adaptable nature allows it to thrive in urban and residential landscapes, bringing filtered shade, golden autumn color, and a classic tree silhouette to lawns, parks, and streets.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Shademaster Honeylocust Tree, scientifically known as Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Shademaster’, is a popular thornless shade tree with delicate, finely textured foliage that casts soft, dappled light beneath its canopy. Its fast growth, urban tolerance, and brilliant yellow fall color make it a top choice for lawns, parks, streetscapes, and large residential landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; typically matures to approximately 40–60+ feet tall with a 30–50+ foot wide spreading canopy under ideal conditions.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and moderately while the tree establishes in the first growing season. Once established, Shademaster is drought‑tolerant and typically only needs supplemental water during extended dry spells or heat waves. Shademaster Honeylocust performs best in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to maximize canopy development and fall color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant to maintain structure and allow better clearance beneath the canopy. Remove crossing or weak branches to strengthen the central leader and encourage an upright, open form.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow‑release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins to support robust green foliage and overall tree health. Avoid over‑fertilizing, which can lead to excessive vegetative growth.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Shademaster Honeylocust is hardy in Zones 4–9 and generally does not require winter protection. In colder climates, mulch around the root zone in late fall to help insulate roots and moderate soil temperature.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a site with full sun and well‑drained soil. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Set the tree so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches from the trunk to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Water regularly during the first year to help the roots establish and avoid overly wet soil. Shademaster Honeylocust’s adaptability and fast growth make it ideal for lawns, streets, and large landscape spaces where a reliable, shade‑producing tree is desired.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

Shademaster Honeylocust thrives in USDA Zones 4 through 9, adapting well to a wide range of climates from northern cold to milder southern regions. It performs best in full sun and well‑drained soil, tolerates heat and drought once established, and handles urban conditions like pollution, salt, and compacted soil with ease. Its open, fine‑textured canopy provides soft shade without overly dense leaf drop.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
