PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Ruby Falls Redbud Tree, scientifically known as Cercis canadensis ‘Ruby Falls’, is a breathtaking, compact flowering tree prized for its cascading, weeping branches and deep burgundy foliage that emerges in spring. Before the leaves appear, the tree is cloaked in striking lavender‑red, pea‑like blooms that attract pollinators and bring vibrant early‑season color to landscapes. This small weeping redbud delivers multi‑season interest in a manageable size perfect for patios, small gardens, or specimen planting. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, developing the best leaf color and flower production with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 6–8 ft tall and 5–6 ft wide.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. After establishment, this redbud is moderately drought tolerant, but it benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods or heat waves. Ruby Falls performs best with at least 4–6 hours of direct sun each day to maximize flower and leaf color. In hot summer climates, afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch and stress.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune this weeping redbud in late spring or early summer after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning in early spring, as that can reduce flowers.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow‑release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins to support healthy foliage and bloom production. Work it lightly into the soil around the drip line, and avoid over‑fertilizing, which can lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Ruby Falls is cold‑hardy in Zones 5–9 and typically needs no special winter protection once established. In areas prone to late freezes, applying mulch around the root zone can help insulate soil and protect roots from extreme fluctuations.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a well‑drained site with full sun to partial shade and dig a planting hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Gently remove the tree from its container and set it so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, tamping lightly to remove air pockets, then water thoroughly. Add a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk to avoid rot. Water regularly for the first season to establish a strong root system, and avoid overly wet conditions, especially in clay soils, as redbuds prefer moderate moisture and good drainage.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Ruby Falls Redbud is well‑suited to USDA Zones 5 through 9, tolerating both cold winter temperatures and warm summer climates. Its compact size makes it ideal for small yards and urban landscapes, while its showy spring flowers and colorful foliage create year‑round interest. This redbud performs best in well‑drained soil, with protection from excessive moisture, and adapts to a range of soil types as long as drainage is good. Pollinators like bees and butterflies are often attracted to the early blooms, enhancing garden biodiversity.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
